Just how would one remove a stubborn crank handel from the shaft on a 1938 Gilbarco gas pump?

Have everything off the pump but this.

I sure do not want to ruin it but may have to.

Thanks for all your help.

While your Soaking it with Coke Cola, work on a Case of Beer. Every Couple of Beers pour more cola on handle. When all Beer is gone, it should be ready to remove crank handle. IF it is still stuck, call & I'll send ya a 50# Single Jack [sledge], course you'll have to pay shipping Both ways!

If the handle won't budge, leave it on the crank rod and send it out for rechroming that way. By removing the side, the reset crank/rod should come apart with it? I do it all the time and it works! Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Paul,

Thought about that and that may be the only way to get it off however there are two washers on there between the skin and the "key" itself.

Are we sure they were chrome to begin with? There is not one ounce of chrome left on the handle...just a peuter-gray handle as with the other two peuter-gray items.

I have seen old Model A Ford handles which are older than this and still have the nickel on it.

Thanks again Paul for your advice.

I was in the barn today and while I was moving a few pumps, noticed that just about all the reset cranks were chromed/bright? Did not see any that weren't. Checked over fifty units. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I heated my up and then used a puller/steering wheel puller and slowly pulled it off... heat up & moved out a bit and repeat... also drilled a 1/8" hole & put some wd40 spray inside to help.

What about this method...

Cut the rod about 1/2 way. That way it can be removed.

Then when it goes back together, find a "sleve" which will fit snugly over the rod, drill a hole through the sleve and the rod on both sides of the cut, then put a small split pin to hold the two together?

Good/Bad idea?

Thanks guys for all your help...This is my first attempt at restoring a pump.

did you remove the set pin--a little heat could work--but good chance youll warp the panel--there should be a cotter pin in between those washer if not cut them out with a die ginder--it just a washer if no hole - when putting back together you just drill a hole to put a cotter pin to hold it from comming out--

we had just finish doing 10 gilbarco pumps--so we ran in to this problem-easy fix
