Was wondering if anyone has thoughts on "preserving" a painted tin sign where the paint has started to flake off? Like, should you somehow try to stop additional flaking, or just leave it alone? If it's OK to do something, what? Would a light clear coat of some sort be OK, or would that drastically effect the resale value? The topic of "restoring" would seem to be a bid different than "preserving"....that is, stopping further degradation.

Hey Richard,
Something you may want to do is contact your local art museum or history museum. They usuall have a restoration help line.
I know for a fact that the St. Louis Art Muesem has a help line.
My Wife called and asked about cleaning a Oil painting we got at a estate sale.
They gave a simple answer. Beleive it or not they told her to try a little spit on a
q-tip on a edge or corner to see if it will clean!
I'm sure your answer won't be a simple but I would try there first.
