I thought some of you guys may find this interesting. I am working on a rusty clock face pump which I plan on leaving original in its rusty condition. I picked up some original trim bezels and a original globe housing for it at Iowa gas this year. The globe housing was painted red and stood out like a sore thumb on the pump. So I did some reading on how to rust metal and I experimented with it. First I glass bead blasted the globe to bare metal. Then I took a mixture of muriatic acid and copper and sprayed onto the globe housing. I sprayed it 2 times in one hour and let it set for another hour. Then I rinsed it off with a baking soda and water mixture. Poured salt water over it and let it set over night. I thought it turned out pretty good. It will match my old rusty pump much better now. I put my repop lens in and now it is ready to go back out side.

IF the globe body is an Original, SHAME ON YOU [Should have used a repop or an original Rusted out body]! Get the birds to Krap on it [use a metal dish & small magnet to hold on top of globe]. Add some Bullet Hole Decals to pump & globe/body!

DB,It is a original housing but it wasnt the original paint on it. Later on if I decide to paint it and use on something else all I would have to do is bead blast it again and repaint it to the pump I was doing. I am just trying to put the pump back together with all original parts. I'll post a picture of the pump all together when I'm done.

Wow, good results. The body looks as if it’s been sitting out in the weather for years.
If it’s that easy to re-create that "rusty" look, it proves the importance of knowing how to spot an original globe body vs. a reproduction. I can envision "crooks" out there doing this to reproduction bodies and selling them as "original" bodies found in someone's attic or barn. That’s why I'm very hesitant to buy a globe body off Ebay as I don't have the experience to tell the difference between an original body vs. a reproduction. Just when I think I can tell, someone on this site sells an original body that I could have sworn was a reproduction.

all the crooks have gotten real good at rusting the repro signs. Maybe this is their method?
