Anyone have tips for putting a replacement glass in the Tokheim 39? I worked for about an hour yesterday and still unsuccessful. Tried using detergent and water to make the rubber slicker...still could not get the glass installed.
Any helpful tips appreciated, Clayton

Did you try using the heavy cord in the rubber channel then pulling the cord out thru the front side while pressing the glass forward from the inside? Glass installers use this trick.

I use windex and a speaker cord.
Gas pump heaven has a short video you can watch. One should note the glass they install goes in front. 39 goes in from the back.

Usually the problem is the reproduction rubber is made oversize and if you cut the glass off an original, its a Very tight fit and next to impossible. Wait until you try putting a tok or bennett curved glass repro in with repro rubber. A hook awl is very helpful but be careful along unsanded edges on the glass. Have the same problem with vintage car reproduction windshield channel and glass made to original patterns.

Larry is right. I fought the glass on the 39 I did a while back for over an hour before I finally cut it down about a quarter inch. I use a hook awl to work the rubber around the edge of the opening instead of the cord. Never could get the cord deal to work very good. If you think a Tok 39 is hard, try something bigger with really short radius corners like a Bowser 595. I got one side in after about an hour and broke the second one. I decided to just take it to the glass shop and let them do it. He broke two pieces before in finally getting one in. I didn't feel quite so bad after that.....GB.

Thanks....broke one glass so far after sweating for about an hour wrestling with it. Thought soapy water would help...wrong!

Been over a year since I did mine, but if I remember correctly, I had to cut about 1/8" off the inside rubber all the way around. The edge that is inside that you won't see when it done. Then soaped it up and it was a lot easier. Larry's post above is correct, the rubber is a tad bit oversized.
