After 14 years of hanging on the end of my machine shed with no one bothering any of my "Barn Hangers" someone stole a Mobil Oil shield sign off the end of the shed Friday night, and had unscrewed a Wareco sign and left it on the ground. It was a Mobil,Pegasus shield with several small chips, About 36" by 48". I do not expect to find it, but if you live in the Midwest and anyone tries to sell one, it may be stolen. We all hate it, but things happen. Norm Huff

Norm,
If you have a picture of the sign, post it, or send it to me to post. It would help to positively ID your sign, if it is seen anywhere.

Hate it when this thing happens.

Hate to hear of the theft. I had some signs stolen a few years ago from my yard so I know how you feel.

One collector advised the following to help reduce the easy theft of signs. Use several different types of bolt/screws/nails/clips to hold exterior signs including bolting thru the wall with a carriage bolt on the outside.

If the thief has to spend more than a couple minutes to remove a sign they will get frustrated.

Another security measure if you have several signs in a particular area is to get one of the hunting cameras that only take pictures when something crosses it's path. It will record the thief in action even at night!

Deer cams are good in some cases to help identify thieves, but they are not a deterrent...the signs will still be gone. Make the area inaccessible to anyone. Thieves used a cherry picker here many years ago to get some Coke "buttons". It is a shame, but it is what it is.

Sorry to hear about your signs getting swiped. The trick I use for my "Barn Hangers" is to use long Robertson screws, the square hole type, then drill the centre out. Then the crack heads can't use any screwdriver to take them down. I know you can't get Robertson screws and screwdrivers in the good ol U.S. Of A but I hope you get the Idea!! Dave

Bet ya heard that on the Internet!
Check again.

IF a crook wants Anything, they will get it. You can slow them down but not stop them.

that is until they put a drill bit into the screw gun... or just use a battery powered dremel or cutoff tool. db said it right, they will get it if they want it.

I still think the best method is to invest in a couple of canines smile

Make sure you post on several cities' Craigslist and in "Pennysaver" papers. Let members of car clubs in your area know, too. Make it very difficult for the s(*)*heads to sell it within a couple hundred mile radius.

I hate thieves! It angers me to read that your sign was stolen. Wish you had caught them in the act.

Thieves are opportunist looking for an easy target. Well documented fact that if you make it difficult; you will deter them. Most are looking for an easy target. Take away the opportunity and chances are you won't be a victim. They will seek out an easier target. Another thing to bear in mind is most thieves return if they were successful the first time. Hope you get to play some baseball and bat a home run when they return.....

Ask Ryan about confronting Thieves & what happens when caught on cameras.
Then ask yourself "Can I Afford to Confront/Stop them?"

My brother and I caught a burglar back in 1980. We were sharing a duplex. We were both petty "beefed up" at the time working out and eating like three normal men. I was around 270 and solid. He was around 230. I chased him for about two blocks and my brother "clothes lined" him as he ran around the corner of a building. I put him on the ground and got on top of him so he could not get up and run again. I hate running. He tried to plead insanity at the preliminary hearing. Everybody in the courtroom started laughing. It is funny today, because it worked out. It could have had a different outcome. Stuff isn't worth your life or your health. Be careful what you do. I let testosterone cloud my judgement, but I was lucky. Dave
