Save your money up and buy an original. You can pick entry level globes up for $200 or less or even buy single lens globes to start.
Drive with Care and Buy Sinclair!! I buy Sinclair globes, signs, cans, ect.

I would suggest getting a short list together of a few of the globes or companies your interested in and post it in the "wanted to buy" section. As mentioned above, some original globes are still quite plentiful and affordable, so instead of paying $125 for a reproduction, go the little bit more and get one that at least has the ability to appreciate in value. I see Sinclair is one of your interests. You can pick up some of the Dino regular and supreme globes pretty reasonably at gas/oil shows, where you won't pay an inflated Ebay price for a common globe. You can check places like the following and compare.
Gaspump.com vics66.com gaspumpheaven.com time-pass.com
I have to agree that original globes are nice and some are within reach compared to repop globes, but there are also a number of options in branding that is opened up for a good price with repop.
Regarding originals, check out Scott at gasglobes.com as I have bought 2 original globes from him and one was a really good value and close to the cost of a repop globe

I agree with all the comments and this is exactly how I started out. As your globe collection grows you can start trading up. I would also def get a hold of Scott as he can really help you with what your looking for. I would also buy the best you can afford. A broken globe is still a broken globe no matter how you look at it. Some will say that a broken globe still has some value and they are right, but unless you find a poly or rainbow something line that than there is not much value

The only "advice" I could add to all of the above, excellent comments is that a repro globe still might make sense to you, IF you plan to have the gas pump outside. Some guys will use reproduction globes for outside display, if they are worried about theft, breakage, weather damage, etc. John

I agree with all the comments above. Save your money and buy something worth your money. First thing you should do before you get into globes is get Scott's globe CD. It is the best thing for info on globes!!

Most gluf globes are expensive. I think standard would be OK. You just have to find one. IMO, a good company to start with is sinclair. They have a bunch of globes known, and they are a entry level.
