why did the globe have a hole in the top? did they light it with a candle?

I don't know if it is an urban myth or not...but I have been told it was to help with ventilation. Not sure if that was heat or fumes...or both. No candle.... Black T may have the answer.

When first used there was a concerned about an explosion when the light came on for the globe. They were afraid gas fumes would fill the globe, that is the reason for the vent.

Here's mine, a milk glass etched, white "T" canopy globe from that era.

Thanks,

Heres mine and I still haven't started work on it yet. It was broken and put back together with silicone. I plan to dismantle it and reassemble it properly with epoxy.
Its about as close as I will ever get to one and I got a bonus with it---it still had the impossible to find chimney cap on it!! GREAT globe!

Very cool pic!

Is there not other brand examples of this type globe? Texaco could not have been the only brand thinking there was need to vent the pumps, were they? Or were they?

There are many company's who used them. One thing you could do Steve is just put "chimney" in the search bar on Scott's globe CD, and lots of them pop up. texaco, esso, red crown, ETC.
