Good evening everyone. My friend's brother is thinking of making some scale model visible gas pumps. He is a very skilled machinist and makes scale models of other objects. He was wondering if anyone would be willing to buy a model if he would make some and how much you would be willing to pay for one. You would be able to choose what kind of brand that you want if it is able to be made. I think that they would be around 20 inches tall but I don't know for sure. He could possibly make the internals so that the pump might actually work, but that would increase the price as you can imagine. The model in the pictures were made by a different man that has since passed.

It could be done out of cast iron or aluminium. Then final machining would take place. Aluminium would be the easiest and cheapest.

They will have to be Highly Detailed & all items Scaled/ Proportion. Higher the detail = More Time Involved & Higher the price. It will be a tough sell for anything more than a Novelty item as are the liquor dispensing items that are made in China. MOST the members here are after original items, not newly made items. GOOD LUCK.

Boy I could fit a lot more of those in the shop with room to spare. Sort of like miniature horses in the barn!

Here's one I made on a wood lathe many years ago. Nothing precise or elaborate but was fun to make in a very short time with pieces laying around my shop.

Jason K,
I like the idea of a 20" model. Would look super cool on the table behind my desk. I, for one, would not care if it was 100% super accurate. If one was made like Sams that was a Fry 117 pump I would be interested. Different strokes for different folks and all that.
Maybe your friend's brother could go the same route that model cars have gone....offer a 'standard' model for a reasonable price and also a 'premium' model that is super detailed and brings a prettier penny.
I know I would add one to my Christmas list, which is right around the corner. Have your guy make one or two and show them here with a ballpark price estimate and see what happens. Make it a Fry 117, for no particular reason what so ever.
Just my .02 cents worth.
Michael

I agree with DB. This is the wrong audience and site to market that scale model. The majority of us on this site are collectors and would have a difficult time justifying spending the monies to purchase a novelty item. Most of us, wouldn't miss a beat, spending many times more on a real sign or item.
It's not a matter of price point but rather collecting interests.

If you look on Ebay, there are usually models by Franklin Mint or one of the many other suppliers. My opinion is that this would be difficult to sell and make any kind of profit. Paul www.severngaspumps.com
