I recently bought a pair of Bennett 756 gas pumps and cleaned them up and gutted them. Wired inside each pump was 2 of these spanner wrenches. I'm just wondering what they were used for, to have been attached to each pump?

I have always wondered what they were for as well. I only find them on Bennett pumps. How were they used or where do they fit on the VR?

I have several of those wrenches. They fit on the piece on top of the meter that is circled. This picture is a Bennett 966.

They are for calibrating (adjusting the amount given) the #1000 type bennett "METER" as in Matt's picture.

Take off the lead-wire seal, drop the brass cover and use the spanner wrenches to adjust the outer shaft which the center hole is offset for adjusting the stroke of the piston.
Two came wired to every pump with a 1000 METER.

I have used them several times in my younger days.

Thank you guys so very much! I remember that drive connection when I was gutting the pumps! It puzzled me at first, as to how it came apart, but I quickly figured it out.
Its nice to be able to find out about these little tidbits of pump information when a question arises. Glad you guys were able to answer it!

All the ones I have were wired in the pump in pairs except one. It is a single that is smaller than the rest.

The next Bennett METER update was the "3000" that came next.
CIRCA ?????
The 3000 model did not require the spanner wrences, it had an ajustablble top w/ a pin.
Both the 1000 & 3000 had carbon mechanical seals & lapped "seats"

Later Bennett went to the 4000 model, same body, same pistons, same cover plates, gaskets, similar type of pin adjustment but uses a "Lip Seal"

The tolorance on the pistons are so close no rings or cups are needed, brass on brass & no bypass.

Well, I don't know very much about those pumping units, except for one thing! They are the HEAVIEST units that I have ever removed from a pump, and I've removed a lot of them.

That's a fact. 50's Bennett's are heavy compared to similiar pumps from the same era. Wayne 100-A's are pigs to move around as well.
