Pan Am Globe. I have never seen this one before. I bought this (single) at Columbus 2012. Is this a rare bird? All of my other Pan Am Globes with the burst in the center are all 15 inch dia. This is 13.5 inch with a indented notch a 12 o'clock. 15 inch lenses have the same notch at 6 o'clock. I was told that it was from the Pan Am Sunset Palace Hotel...Where? Is this a canopy globe since the notch is at 12 o'clock? Did they make a 13.5 inch metal body, because I have never seen a original one. The globe body is a fantasy metal body from Vic's.

Hey paddy doesn't the notch at 12 mean it would have been on a banded body at some point

your right Shawn. I keep thinking metal body because all of my other Pan AM globes are in metal...Having a senior moment.. Now the question is why 13.5? Period of this design when all others were 15 inch.

Paddy, Doesn't the banded bodies date back to the era of some metals? Banded and hulls date to about same time meaning it could be used on the pan-am.
Now to why... who knows! LOL

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

A friend of mine pulled some 13.5 Pan-Am burst lenses out of an old Pan-Am bulk plant down here (along with the regular 15's I believe). Never could figure them out.

Also-is that the same one pictured in the globe cd?

Wasn't the "Sunset Palace"; just outside of the Main Gate of Polk? It opened for business just as the sun went down...

You know the place, Paddy...

Where the Troops went for some R&R during AIT weekends... grin whistle blush

That place (bar) was called Tinkers Dam and that was where you got your butt whipped Bob.

Now can anyone tell me about the Sunset Palace?

Thanks Dave and also to TheGriffin that messaged me with the same info. Guess I need the CD and toss my old globe books in the truck.

I saw this posting while at work on Thursday and meant to post then but I am really not suppose to surf let alone log into a website. I will first say that I am not a globe expert but I find it very hard to believe this came from New England area as Pan Am was only in the south. Even my reading of the first edition of the Gas Pump Globes book seems to indicate it was a southern based name versus Amoco which was used up north. If it was used there they still must have been pumping Amoco gas since they were affiliates. smile

I will say it is a way cool globe.

PAN AM did have branded stations in NYS prior to WWII, probably late 20s-early 30s era.

Looking for photos, etc from 60s era Shell-A-Rama gas station and Pal's Diner, Rt. 17 Mahwah, NJ
