Great before and after Matt!!

I actually posted this before picture the other day in Great Old Pics, and I knew the location as it was only a mile from the house I grew up in. But I didn't realize that it was the same building. But then you pictures here had me go take a closer look using google street view.
And wow it is the same building!! The brick is just gone from the columns.
But here's the kicker!! Take a look at the two standard globes in the background to the right on top of the front facade!!! They are still there!!!
That is what those are correct? I first i thought someone painted them a solid color. But if you look at the original picture, they look solid there too. Kind of hard to see against the tree's. Any thoughts on the solid color?

Guess where I'll be tomorrow???

i went to high school with this Tim. We didnt' hang around but I knew who he was. I'm somewhat sure he'll remember me. But the thing is, does he know what those are on his roof? I wonder if he knows the history of his building?

Well no good on the roof globes. I luckily found Tim outside working around his shop. The crowns on the roof he said are actually cement. Which explains them being painted. I didn't ask what he knew about them. He mentioned he believe his brother still has a few off of the pumps. I may check back in another time and inquire about them.
I have to imagine that someone must have filled a globe with cement and then broke the actual glass globe off of it in order to create these. Unless anyone here has every heard of Standard supplying cement globes to some/any of it's stations.
He said he knew of the station owners family name but only through his parents how lived across the side street in this picture. As for the house in the back, this Tim actually now lives in it. He said his grandfather built it.

Inside of a Crown has very little detail. I'd guess they made a 4 part mold of outside then cast them from that.

I had this old picture of an old Sunoco station in Au Gres, Mi. I took a shot and ran down the main drag in town using google street view and found the building as it exists today. Well actually the view on google street view said 2009. Wow, I need to get a life!! Well none the less, always cool to see these "then and nows".

Wow!!! Now this one is crazy!! I cannot believe this building is still there. This is deep down into the not so great area's of Detroit. The sign post street sign (Woodlawn) gives away for sure this to be the same building and I am standing on Van Dyke Ave in the google street view. Incredible this is still there!!

Steve the signs intrigue me. On the back in the day picture you have "carless service" and "high test action". You can have some fun with those in the today shot as most stations give you careless service and that part of Detroit, if I read you right, has a lot of high test action-just not gasoline high test!

That's funny , this would apply to parts of St. Louis as well . I worked at a freightligner dealer one summer off Taylor ave in the late 90's , I learned to fill up down home as one station was constantly getting robbed and had plenty of high test action always going on!
