I am restoring a Tokheim 300 pump with Texaco markings. I need to know if Firechief was a regular or premium gasoline so I can get the correct ad glass.

Good question, I would also like the answer. I am too young to know and have not researched the subject.
It was regular priced as this commercial mentions.

Fire Chief was Texaco's regular grade, however a "regular" ad glass wouldn't be correct. Texaco used their own ad glasses (with Fire Cheif on it).

I have read that Texaco didn't use ad glasses on pumps with ad glasses under the computer. However, I have seen a few pictures with ad glasses placed under the computer. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Texaco mainly used Tokheim pumps , so both 39s shorts and 300s had add glass panels in the doors below the computers
So either Sky Chief or Fire Chief add glass was used on these pumps .

So Jamie is correct with Texaco not using regular or premium add glass for their pumps

I've seen many different pumps branded TEXACO. Mom & Pop stations used what ever pumps they had or could get used from their distributor.

You are right Dick, they used what ever was available . But those pumps did have add glass below the computer, and the Bennett 976
So I'm just saying they did put Texaco add glass below the computer. in some of the ones I have seen.

In all the photos I've studied bet there's been an equal amount of Wayne 70s... I have a Short 39 with Sky Chief ad glass under the computer, "Original"

Believe Dick is corret about the small guys . I Own and have seen a lot of neptune 855 with original texaco add glass above computer. Even wayne 70 with original texaco add glass

There's not a doubt that Texaco used ad glasses above the computers, it's the question if they used one under the computer.

The book I was reference is "Gas Pump Collectors Guide" by Scott Benjamin and Wayne Henderson (page 65)

"Ad glasses were used on pump designs with ad glass above the dial face. No ad glass was ever used below the dial face".

Like Doug mentioned, if you study pictures of Texaco stations you'll find some distributors used ad panels under the dial face.

Another real good book for studying pictures is called "Gas Stations" by Wayne Henderson and Scott Benjamin (if you can find a copy, it was published in 1994). It has over 500 pictures of stations in it and is invaluable in research.

Blacktee, On your pump is that Sky Chief pump plate in the original born in position? I ask because if it is I am going to raise my Fire Chief plate up a ways to match your level. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for all your input. I think I will use the Firechief Ad glass. I am not real concerned about being exactly correct, I just want it to look good. In fact I am considering red and white paint instead of all red. Red with white front and rear panels looks pretty good. Thanks again, I better get started and my parts ordered.

Here's a few Tokheim 39's I did up for a customer in the color's you are considering.

I scrolled to the top of page 2 and mistakenly thought you were restoring a Tok 39. Here's a pic of a Tok 300, I did for a customer.

IMO I would go with the star globe on any Fire Chief pump...Its more correct for a Tok 300

I noticed they have a black or white outline on the Texaco star on the globes or signs. Why is this,is it different time periods?

Black around the T are older globes and signs ,but for your era pump it should have white around the T (signs and globe)but not really sure if they repop white T globes or not? You might have to go with originals or settle for the repop black around T globe and sign.
