Wow! look what I found, is what one of my friends said along with several picture texts as he is uncovering a Flying A sign on his property. It was covering an old well. He was very excited because he is also a gas and oil collector. The sign cleaned up even better than it is in the last picture. I remember walking around the property with him after he bought it and pointed off a trail and said there is the original well for the property back in the day. It was covered in overgrowth and had a small wooden structure over it. The sign was under the structure covering the hole.

I had a Hudson/Terraplane sign from 1937 that was a well
cover find. Must have been a common idea.

Same thing for me. Back in the 70's I bought a near mint 6' Gulf sign that covered a well. Guy insisted that he had to have $6 for it!! I gave him some old sheet metal to recover the well.

Great find & story. Its amazing how many signs where used to cover wells. I have a few in my collection that where used in this manner & have seen others too. That one is a beauty for sure!!

Eons ago I found a 6' round double sided SIGNAL covering a cistern, wording only NO Stop light. Gave it away!

Awesome find! Bet that made his day & beyond. The Flying & Service font looks a bit thinner/different than mine. I wonder if that was regional or if one is just an earlier example than the other.
