Went out to my friends house yesterday to checkout the gas pump he told me I could have last summer. I think I told the story back then but the deal was that it had been pulled and the inground tank removed twenty years ago when he bought the farm. He told me that the guys who removed the tank had just wrapped a chain around the pump and drug it out behind his corral and that it had a dented door. At the time he offered it to me it wasn't even visible through the ragweed and brush and he said it was full of wasp nests and mud dobbers. So, I thought after all the snow and ice was gone I would go check it out, not really having any idea what to expect.I was expecting to have to dig through a bunch of brush and dig it out of the ground. Well, I pulled in the drive and around the barn and to my surprise there it sat on an old piece of painted plyboard...a nice Neptune 855! It is in really good shape and all there as it was the day it was taken out of service. There was a big grapevine that had grown up the hose and into the pump with shoots growing out every crack and around the ad glass. There was indeed a bunch of wasp nests and the mud dobbers had gone condo inside. But, the dented door is minor in comparison to a lot I have fixed and the only other parts that were gone was the door glass on the dented side and the ad glass was broken on that side too. It was apparently a Phillips pump as the broken glass was readable and was a Flite Fuel glass. The other side had faced the sun so that ad glass was faded out. The faceplates are pretty badly faded as they are the screened aluminum ones and not porcelain but the Red Seal logo is still legible on both. All in all a great old pump and you just can't beat the price! I told my friend that I wanted to pay him something for it but he refused saying it was just junk. I am going to at least take him out to a nice dinner. When I got back home I looked through my ad glass and found a perfect set of Flite Fuel glasses for it so I may restore it back to what it was originally but I don't have a 66 globe so I guess that's another one to start looking for. Hard to believe that there is still so much stuff out there that ends up being right in your back yard. This type of find is what makes this hobby so enjoyable to me......Gary

Love it. More evidence of "it's still out there..."

I see comments about the 'good ol days are gone', 'everything is too high' etc. There are plenty of things in the wild still, often cheap or free...
