I was doing my usual Mobil searches on Ebay last night when this Mobil restroom sign showed up. At first glance it looks like mine, but upon reading the seller's description and viewing the other photos, I do notice it's different. The seller is saying this is painted, not porcelain. Were there two different versions of this sign made, painted tin and porcelain? I've only been aware of porcelain in my years in the hobby. Ebay item 171220838053
The size is the same as mine, but the back on my porcelain version is black, while this one is white. The Ebay sign does have odd scratches that look more like paint than porcelain, but I know porcelain obviously scratches as well. It has several watchers, but no one has pulled the trigger on it, which surprises me but could be because of the tin vs. porcelain question.
Although it's a "newer" sign, IMO this sign is much scarcer than the popular shield restroom signs that bring a lot more money. I guess it's just not as graphically pleasing as the shields but I think they were made in much more limited numbers.

Nice sign, is that what they sell for or was that a good deal? Is it a easy sign to find? Now, my search begins.

No Dave, not a particularly easy Mobil sign to find. I would wager I've easily seen 20 or more shields to every one of these rectangular ones. I think the price was certainly fair at $200, so someone got a pretty good deal if it's porcelain. It very well could be the seller didn't know the material, as he mentions it's heavy steel. It is...I weighed mine and it weighs over a quarter of a pound, which is pretty heavy for the size. I always noticed the weight of mine and thought it was hefty.
Guess we'll see if anyone on here got it and can confirm the material.

It looked like porcelain and I think whoever got it got a smokin deal. I have seen these sell for in the five hundred dollar range

IMO that sign stands 0 chance of being porcelain....I'm kind of surprised anyone thinks it is...has dark staining at top and dark scratches....Just my 2 cents.

Dont worry.... everyone has a second chance at another one.
I do not have mine available to look at but if I remember correctly it is painted. Your theory about porcelain/black and painted/white might be correct. Now tomorrow Ill have to go and pull mine off the wall and check.

After looking at it more close, I am thinking it may be painted. I have never seen a painted one before. You know what they say though, just because you never seen a white crow, doesn't mean there isn't one. LOL
