Last night I made a horrible mistake! Another Old Gasser and myself had teamed up to buy this plate on ebay last night and were going to enter a final bid that was surely high enough to obtain the plate. We had a formula worked out to decide which of us would be the owner in the end and all seemed well.
Here is where human error came into play. The auction wouldn't go off until about 11:15 pm and I was tired as all heck, so I set my cell phone alarm to wake me at 11 in case I fell asleep! Well, the unimaginable happened and my alarm didn't go off and I missed the auction and let my friend down terribly! As per our formula, he would have been the new owner of the plate and we would have both been smiling! Instead, I messed up bad and could hardly sleep last night.
If anyone on this site was lucky enough to win the auction for this plate and aren't completely glued to it---I would gladly give a major profit to you and give the plate to the person I let down. I realize that its only another sign, but this meant a lot to my friend and I am at fault for him not owning it today! Hopefully I can locate the sign and make amends for my horrible oversight. If anyone has it and can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks---KEVIN

this is a good example where a "snipe" would
have come into play- that is only the 3rd one
of the Mobilfuel Diesel Special that I've seen-
even Pegasus (Richard Weir) didn't have that sign,
extremely RARE, somebody got a good buy
I have one but this one was nicer.. cool

Sorry to hear it didn't work out....I was the second bidder. Thought the sign would sell for a lot more! I figured that low number feedback was not you Kevin when I looked this morning to see where it ended.
I've seen that buyer buying Mobil items as I recognize the low feedback and the letters are the same that I've seen on some other higher dollar Mobil items, not that it probably helps any.

it's a long shot but why don't you contact the original seller & see if he will give you the information of the person who purchased it or have him contact that person to see if he can give you that buyers information

because that would be super shady to do to the actual winner. best way to do it is to try and track down the winner and offer him a profit to resell the piece

I did contact the seller and he knows the buyer and is going to check with him to see if he will resell it! Maybe it will all work out? My friend is not mad at me and understands that things happen, but we're a little disappointed, as I'm sure we would have owned that plate!
I do my own sniping because I have a pass key to access my ebay and paypal accounts and that doesn't work with sniping services. After I had my accounts hacked into at one time, I went with eBay's access key system and you have to push a button on the key and then enter the 6 digit code that comes up. Pretty foolproof.

not stray off-topic... but what Kevin mentions above is one downside to sniping - giving ebay login information to a 3rd party. If you do snipe, BE SURE to ALWAYS keep your paypal password different than your Ebay password.

Sniping is a paid service that will automatically place a bid for you in the closing seconds of the auction. You have to give them your username and password.

You can place a small bid early through our Oldgas.com eBay search form or "Right Now on eBay" links. Then set up your snipe for the end of the auction.

I've never had any problem with AuctionSniper.com

. Your not the Lone Ranger , I didn't know what snipping was either until JIm explained . My grandfather always tried to get me to go snipe hunting ( holding a bag and waiting for the snipe birds) as a kid but I never did. I was always to scared of the dark and the woods.

I think I am the dumb one. I would always make sure I am available for the end of each auction I wanted to bid on & I would bid it. That explains why I don't always get the item!!!

I must be missing something here, if Kevin and an old gasser were involved what happened to the old gasser did he fall asleep also? Why would you feel guilty, what's wrong with the other party

If they both would have bid, then they would have paid their absolute max as they would have bid against each other.
They agreed one would bid, Kevin, and his alarm didn't go off.

sniping is like what Ron Popeil says in the infomercial "Set it and forget it" take what you feel is your best shot and get some sleep.

Ted-- We were teamed up to buy the item instead of bidding against each other. I was to place my highest bid as a snipe and between us, we had worked out a formula that would decide who got the plate depending on the amount of the winning bid.
The plan was a good one but didn't account for my human error!

I bought one about 25 years ago. Sold it about five years later. Regretted it ever since. Tried to buy it back numerous times. No luck. Ended up buying one from Leo Mathieu at Columbus last summer. Then bought another at Iowa Gas and sold it to Mike Carr. Knew it was rare, but realized how rare when I found out Richard never had one. Pretty good bragging rights to say that I've owned three! Kevin, hope you can get it. I agree about esnipe. I've used it for years now. Place your bid and forget it. Either you get it or you don't. Pat.

E snipe works great, been using it for years.. Only time it let me down was my own fault, I changed my eBay password and forgot to update the e snipe account... I set a bid on an item and I didn't go through... Other than that it's a great service!

Pat, I looked for this sign for 27 tears since I began collecting and will always appreciate you selling me one at Iowa Gas last summer. Prior to last summer, I had only seen 1 for sale in Wm Morford's Auction. As much as I tried to win it, the final selling price was beyond my spending limit at the time. The one on Ebay is only the 4th one I have ever seen for sale. They are rare and tough to find. Good luck Kevin in your attempt to purchase the one you missed.

Mike, you're very welcome. I couldn't believe that I found two within two months. Randy, I kept the one I bought in Columbus. Won't be selling it!

I agree....the buyer got a good deal. Probably worth another $1000-$1500 at least. The hardest Mobil shield to find in my opinion.

Ok time to come clean. Kevin and I went in together to buy the sign and had the plan all set. Things didn't go accordingly and we lost it. No biggy life goes on, BUT Kevin was stressing and sick!

Thanks to another oldgasser, whose name i will not mention, was kind enough to offer me the exact sign for my collection. I was able to seal the deal and now have a great wall and conversation piece as well. Years down the road i will be able to laugh and tell the story of the auction gone wrong!!

At the end of the day it is just STUFF. None of it will matter anymore when we are dead and gone but at least we had fun and made good memories. All of us in one way or another will always have "the one that got away".

So thanks to everyone and their support. I speak for Kevin and myself, we appreciate it. Out of this ordeal i have gotten a great friend and mentor.

Thanks
Dan
