Pump you posted picture of is 20-25 miles from me.

That's funny cuz I thought of you and/or Randy when I saw it to be in Cali!!

I just thought it was an intersting little twist on a 39 tall.

This was an option and typically used at truck stops, this same question led me to this site as I had never seen one until I bought this one and restored it I was told they were for truck stops so you had more hose to get around the trucks.

First of all, the picture you found on Severn's site was taken from my book, the picture is in the lower right corner of page 285.

The pump is a 39HR. The hose is on a reel, and the HR stands for Hose Reel.

Now what am I missing? It appears to me to be the same pump, what is it that you are stating is a "farmer Modified?"

Steve, I'm unsure if you noted that Bob's pump is a short Tokheim 39. Option was available on Tall and Short Tokheim 39's.

Correct Dave!
This was an option on the 39 tall and short , I yanked the hose reel out when I restored it that thing added at least 50lbs to it and had 25 feet of gas filled hose that made a heck of a mess in the garage that stunk for at least a week!
Still my favorite pump mostly because it was the first one I ever restored nothing rare about it just proud of it because it was a POS as DB would put it and mine was much worse that this 39 tall but it was still worth bringing back and I learned a lot in doing this pump, it started my "addiction"!
Even being a POS this one would be worth saving but I sure wouldn't start at $900 and that's with no base but those aren't hard to come across but $900 is about $600 to high in my opinion.

Wow, you really think that one on eBay is only worth about $300?

Thanks to everyone for their input on this. I just found it interesting having never seen this before and it's nice to talk about things a bit. Then everyone gets exposed a little, even those who don't say anything and hopefully others got exposed to something new and we all learn.

Have to wonder why anyone would have added,(farmer modified) that upper hose position when the lower one was already there.

I've seen complete 39 tall's around here for 4 to 5 hundred they're pretty common, I really like the 4 add glass style as they look great lit up but 900 is way out of the box it's all there but a base will cost another 75 to 100 on average so you'd be in it for a grand without restoration cost's other than the base it's looks to be complete which helps as all the little things add up quick as far as the "modification" only the guy who did it knows why it was done but that would have to be repaired as well.
Still worth saving just not at the current asking price.

Could be several reasons; Maybe the piping started leaking, reel return busted or he figured he could save a few $$ by buying a shorter hose.
Why do you buy new tires when the old aren't bald/flat?

I have been paying $600-$750 for tall 39's and will continue to do so. After restoration costs it makes for a pretty low priced good looking pump.
