Warren, What COMMON sign and pole sells for that kind of money? Are those asking prices or actual selling prices? I think Frank was reffering to his Standard (Ind) sign. I saw he had it on ebay for $500 which is about right for one in very good condition. Nice Standard signs can be bought for $250-300 without the pole. There is a very limited market for the (common) big signs. Those big sign poles have an even smaller market. A good pole with an oval frame for a Standard sign should bring $150-200 at a swap meet. A pole with a 6' round frame would be worth a little more because there are lots of different signs that will fit in it.....but where can someone display a sign and pole? Not within most city limits. A friend of mine bought a good (but not great)Standard sign for $125 at the Chicagoland's show at Peotone about a year and a half ago. If Frank's sign said Utoco instead of Standard it would be in the price range you gave (or higher). I don't remember if Frank's sign had the porcelain 2 piece bowl for the flame globe. Add another $35-50 if it did. Those torch or flame bowls were bringing over $100 2 or 3 years ago, but I've seen several in the $35-50 range in the past year.

This post is interesting and I am learning as I always do. I LOVE this Site. Alot of people (myself included) dont have room for those big signs and poles. They are totally cool but alot of collectors have limited space. Some people just wont pay big bucks for a huge common sign they cant display and will think nothing of shelling out some serious greenbacks for a little sign that they can display. I wish I had more land for those big pole signs ...I would build a bunch of little stations in different brands and you could race go carts around them...LOL. Ok I am back ...er c'mon winning Lottery ticket..LOL

The dealers are always trying to stick the collector. I found a Rio Grande for Ted very rare for 250.00, and a Douglas another rare sign for 250.00, the signs you have Frankie are common and the only guys that want them have huge giant shops. so take them to the dumps.

Now thats kind of drastic isn't it?
I wouldn't haul that pole around to shows, but I'd advertise it. Eventually it will sell..............but you aren't going to retire off of it. Its a loss to our hobby when anything from a station gets scrapped or thrown away thats still in decent shape.

We're just kidding Bob. and your right about the price, I found Ted another mint Texaco sign in Reno for 200.00, and you go to the bashes and see guys with 6' signs asking 2,000 but they carry it around for 2-3 years before they come down to 200, just get the sign T-bone , advertize it and don't handle it to much. but let me know if you find a VELTEX,or CLACK.

My last comment on large signs and poles....they are big, and there is not a big market for them, granted....I sold a TEXACO 6' double-sided porcelain sign on a 10 or 11' pole in G/VG condition here locally for 850. The guy has a pad with two pumps and a oil rack in between. He wanted the big sign by the side of his shop....I have another woman wanting a similiar sign and will get one for her within a few weeks. They do bring that kind of money (800-1300)....Warren

Warren,
Wow! $850 for a Texaco sign and pole is really good money. Those big common signs certainly don't bring that kind of money in the mid-west.

A few things to consider, if you have an old station or the correct mount , it is pretty easy to buy the right pole and simply bolt it on. However some town you need permits and they have to be safe or recertified. If you were to put one up in a new location, it would get expensive, permit, pouring concrete, engineered plan, etc.
So there are more poles without signs layng around than buyers in general. It is way easier to just remove the sign and hang on the wall, which is what usually happened.
I have 2 poles that look like short or shortened Texaco's. I was going to build a gas station type canopy and use them as the outside posts. If I brace them properly and the canopy is not permanently fastened to the building, I may get away as a temporary or moveable structure. That could mean less permit hassles and no tax increase, I hope.
The other thing not mentioned is the more ornate poles, some of them are a lot easier to sell and harder to find. Imperial(ESSO) used one here with a very ornate base, if you can get a complete one they are quite nice, ribbed castings and such...dodogas
