Glad I seen it or it would have been on its way to china as scrap. The sign is toast but the bracket is solid a little crusty on the ends where it bolts to a post or wall. Very cool early piece. ...neat sign, but I don't think these were hand-painted, but hand-stencilled...they were intended for use on telephone/telegraph poles...I have one from 'Meyer the Hustler' in Enfield, NC...I saw one years before, that I wish I had bought...the guy said it was covered in creosote, from being on the pole, but it apparently protected the paint, as it cleaned up pretty well... Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...
