Gotta vent sorry!
I found a sign on craigslist yesterday. I called and talked to the owner and we had made a deal. I told him I could not get there to pick up the sign until I got out of work. He said that would be fine. I asked if he wanted me to send him a deposit via paypal as a good faith gesture he said that wasn't needed. The sign was a bout 2 hrs away,
I get out of work and head out excited to get the my new sign. I can't buy a lot of stuff due to having a family so its rare for me to spend the amount I was going to on the sign $500. Well I arrive after the 2 hour and 20 minute drive only to be told that he sold the sign to someone else about 30 minutes ago because the guy offered him $25 more than I was going to pay. So I never had the opportunity to even match the offer just poof and it was gone...
Thanks vent over but I don't feel any better.

I hope you told him a person is only as good as his word, and he wasn't very high on the chart. He could at least called and offered you the same deal. Not that it would of been right, after you two had agreed that the deal was done. Its a shame that some are so driven by the all mighty dollar. Something to do with up bringing,or the lack of it I think.
To his defense wonder how many call make a deal and never follow through. Back to that your word thing again.

...that sucks...I'd have been tempted to give him some dental bills that wouldn't be covered by the extra $25
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Tom, was it a Mobil sign? I had the same thing happen a couple weeks ago. Almost the exact way, offered a deposit in good faith, called before leaving and when I was about 1/2 hour away he calls and says he sold it to the original owner of the station because it was the right thing to do. Days later I get a call from the person who bought it trying to sell it to me. Unreal! Just part of how people are today. A man is only as good as his word!

sorry nochevys... what a ***** deal
Anytime I'm driving a long ways to make a purchase, I worry about this very same scenario...
I equally blame the guy who offered $25 more. Whatta jerk

A guy told me long ago, when I was just starting out, that this hobby was "driven by greed".
But hey I still love it.

yeah, i think this unfortunately has happened to all of us. Hell, one time I drove an hour to pickup a sign after agreeing on the price... then once I got there, he still had the sign, but had decided he wanted $80 more for it than what we agreed on... I about lost my mind.
