Picked this up a couple of months ago and just cleaned it up. Anyone have any other Martin's cans?

I have this Martin can in my collection Cool find! I think L-head or flathead engines were phased out by the mid 50's?

back when I was collecting Illinois based quart cans, I kept a spreadsheet listing all the Illinois quarts I knew existed (as a way to know what to hunt for)... I had this as one of them - so possibly Illinois based? I'm not sure what led me to that conclusion originally.

Martin Oil Company was founded in southern Illinois in the late 1920s as something of a traditional private-brand (independent) operation. They built up a terminal operation on the Mississippi, and offered the Martin's brand to independent dealers in Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and perhaps some parts of other states. In the late 1940s they started a retail division (Martin Oil Service) based in the Chicago suburbs, a chain of salary operated "discount" stations. Martin Oil Service built up a chain of stations coast-to-coast, but with only minimal representation outside their Illinois-Indiana home base. By the shortages of the 1970s stations could be found in New York, California, Atlanta, etc. In the meantime, Martin Oil Company (the original) sold out their terminal operation to J. D. Street, and Street maintained the original Martin brand into at least the 1980s, alongside their own Zephyr brand. Eventually almost all of Street's Zephyr operation, and presumably the absorbed Martin sites, became major branded stations, and Street is a big player in that market today. Martin Oil Service, after downsizing during the shortages to just Illinois and Indiana, sold out to Marathon's Emro (now Speedway) operation and stations rebranded to Speedway. A more complete history of both branches can be found in Guide to Gas Pump Globes, our e-book from PCM

Wayne that's interesting info . Here is a Martin 5 gallon I have and it says Carbondale il on it for sure. Got this can at a auction once and it was full .This is kind of funny but I used all the oil in a old garden tiller I had for a couple seasons.

Is Martin's and Martin the same oil company? I don't think re-enforced is a word, though enforced and reinforced are but with different meanings. Cheers, Don.

Hey Don its just semantics! LOL. Good catch. BTW while you're doing the word play thingy-is it.."Is Martin's..." or "Are Martin's.."?

Now, you two are beginning to sound like a couple of Martians.
