Anyone have one, or know what this bath sign looks like? It can be seen hanging on the right side of the building.

Also, from when would you date this picture? Seems strange that that Gargoyle sign is still there. I would have thought this station newer than that. I suppose it could just be left over so the owner just puts it out.

That design of station was adopted around 1940, so seeing a Gargoyle sign still in use would not be unusual IMO. The transition cans using the Gargoyle on the top and the small Pegasus shield on the bottom were still being used at that time so the Gargoyle was still a visible trademark, although being phased out by Socony-Vaccum by the mid-40's for most commercial marketing purposes.
I have no idea what the restroom sign could be......

One other thing to point out on the curb sign Steve is this is a mid-1930's version as underneath the Mobiloil the sign says Socony - Vacuum, so the sign at the time wasn't really that old. The earlier 1920's signs were made by Vacuum Oil Company and have the "Ask Here" or "Stop Here For" slogans. It's all in the little details, lol.

Probably just a generic sign and nothing related to mobil.

One small detail that dates this pic is the pumps.
There is two mobilgas and a metro pump. Also look at the pumps...No shields on them.
Probably 1941-1945. They have the rectangle pump plates on them.

The Pegasus above the glass front must be in the tile? I have never seen a curved Pegasus sign. On either side of the Pegasus, was Mobilgas and Mobiloil always in two different font styles?

Dave, I do believe the Pegasus design is part of the porcelain tile façade of this style of station. I sure wish I had an opportunity to inspect one up close. There was one in Detroit, but I heard it was sadly lost to development but I do not know this for a fact.

Darin,
Here are two more pictures of the March station. This is only a few miles from me and I remember when I got into the hobby I thought, "I wish that old Mobil station was still there". Well it's been gone quite a while. I do not know if it was saved in any way. This Marathon stands there today. frown

Thanks for the photos and information Steve, even though I'm saddened to hear it was indeed lost to "development". Man...no vote needed here to see which station was the most pleasing to look at.
