Dean,
Not sure if your still following this thread or still looking for info, but I have the same display cabinet. It is made by Modern Metal Products of Greensboro, NC. The door your missing lifts up then pulls out. There is a large bin which collects the leftover oil from the empty cans which are placed in the top door at an upside-down angle. The top of the cabinet does have a display. I believe it holds two flat advertisements. You may be missing the top bracket for the display. You place the advertisements in the top groove at an angle towards the two bumps on the top of the cabinet. Once in, you screw the top bracket tight with the long screw, which applies pressure and holds the advertisements in place. I just threw a box in there to show you the bracket in the up position. Hope this helps.
-Steve

Dean, Here are some of the pictures you asked about. This is a pic of the top rail for the advertisement display. It is basically a 1/2" x 1/2" x 12 1/2" long U-channel placed in the center of a larger 3/4" wide x 1/2" tall x 17 1/2" long U-channel (probably spot welded together). This leaves a 1/8" groove for a sign on both sides.

Then there is a screw hole drilled through the center. The screw is 11 1/2" long with 1 1/2" of thread on the end. On the underside of the cabinet there is a washer and a wing nut, which is easily accessible through the top door on the side.

The sign would measure anywhere from 9 1/2" high to 10 1/2" high depending on how far you screw the wing nut down. And the sign would be approximately 17 1/2" wide.

Now on to the door.... The door is flat. It measures 23 3/8" tall x 16 3/4" wide at the bottom (widest point on outside of radius) x 12" wide at the top (widest point on outside of radius). The tape measure appears to be 17", but its just an illusion from the way it sits.

You can see all of the channels on the back and side view pictures. Basically you lift the door up and pull the bottom out to remove it. There is a deep channel on the top in order to do this and to keep the door in place.

Once the door is on, there is a 17 1/2" bar that slides through the body of the cabinet and into the channel on the back. The bar is 17 1/2" long with the last 1/2" slightly bent, so it will not slide into the cabinet.

Ok, that was a little bit of homework, so if you do decide to restore it. I want to see some pictures. LOL. If you want to drive to Michigan you can buy mine too. Hope this helps. -Steve

Oh, one last thing, my serial number tag is the same as yours. It does not have "Sel-oil" printed at the top.

No problem. If you need anything else, let me know.

One other thing I wanted to mention.... You could put a cool modern twist on this old cabinet. Run an extension cord up through the cabinet to the top. Then you can run two rounds of rope lighting under that lip at the top. It will light up the cabinet and your oil cans real nice, and you will not be able to see it at all, unless you bend down and look up at it.
