I have a Joy Curb pump very similar to this one, except it is not this ornate with all of the brass and copper tubing that this pump has. I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen a pump like this one? This one is currently on ebay, this is the item # 141248139420 thanks Don

LOOK in the Book pg 180, the one pictured was one of mine [I Had 2 at the time & sold them at Iowa Gas eons ago. Currently working on one. Bruce Witig just finished 2.
Pump on ebay is Dated on visi 1926 LONG BEACH. One I'm working on I Believe is a little earlier & has M W JOY FS PAT. APLD. For on visi The one on ebay is missing the Harp that connects the 2 Air Rams for lifting the plunger & the Alum Castings top & bottom for the Barrel. By removing the 2 top 1/2 castings, barrel can be twisted & lowered to access the inner workings [barrel sheet metal has been extended & placed around base].

Does anyone have any pictures of Joy pumps I can use. The only one I have is the one I took at IG of DB's pumps?
Never have found one piece of literature or one ad for Joy.

Just edited above post. Will get Jack some better pictures of either Bruce's pumps or this one IF in time for New Book.
Randy, Where did you get the 1914 Date? Pictures w/ cars, stations?
Does anyone know of any pumps Before 1920 using Air for the pump lift? The 491 Roman used Air & Roman was introduced in 1924. WAYNE Bought the Boyle Dayton Co., Los Angeles in 1928 & Both BD & Wayne/BD Division used AIR on their pumps.

Don, I have seen 1 other JOY like your NON AIR Operated, 1st thought was someone stripped the pump but later realized it was made as a Hand Cranked. Castings on top of air rams [both sides] are embossed LONG BEACH on all 3 of the pumps I've had.

Here are Bruce's pumps w/ a bit more Plating than original. JOY did use lots of brass.
It's a Good Thing sellers aren't allowed to state False info on ebay! [Hell this seller/restorer didn't/couldn't get pump back to original]

Great info guys. So DB since mine is also missing the "harp" and I would imagine finding a spare one on someone's shelf would be impossible, how would DB suggest fabricating a new one. You have been known to use the most unique items for gas pump replacement parts. It was you that mailed me a sink one time to use as a bonnett for a Bowser 97 pump. lol (the box probably also contained oranges and avacados)

Those restored pumps are great example of industrial design as art. Super restorations with great visual appeal. I am now a member of the Joy Club.

Do you have an Original Hand Crank?

I have one thats just like the one on eBay but non restored. Very cool pumps! The visi has a patent date on it of 1914 so that's prob where he came up with it.

SOME Thing on the visi was Patented in 1914 [screws], pump design is later than that, IMO. Compare the Visi design to other companies at the time. It's more inline w/ most clock face pumps, not Curb style/pre-visible.

Agreed. Just saying it is embossed with a pat date. As you are well aware of most things were pat way before they produced them.

Although it's been awhile since I've actually seen the pump, I do believe I have the original handle. You can almost make it out in one of the photos. An interesting spinner inside the Visi-glass. I had to use old photos, and didn't have time to shoot new ones, so I don't have one, with the cover down. I am missing the wishbone piece for sure. Mine is marked "made in Long Beach". I am also missing the pointers on the dial faces, which are also cracked. I do not have any idea what type of handle should be protruding from the hole with the brass bezel that has the letters "fast-off-slow". You have already enlightened me on this thread, I'm anxious to see what else you come up with.

Agreed. Just saying it is embossed with a pat date. As you are well aware of most things were pat way before they produced them. Actually I have found thru Patent Searches on pumps that most pumps were in production before Patent was applied for. For instance; FRY 17 Air Operated Patent Filing date Nov 8, 1924 & the Issue Date of Jun 4, 1929. WAYNE 491/492 [Roman] Filing Date Apr 25, 1924 & Issue Date of Jun 26, 1928 WAYNE 576 Filing Date of Oct 2, 1926 & Issue Date of Jul 14, 1931

When did they switch to "patent pending" labeling? Do you know DB?

"Patent Pending"; Patent has been Filed, but not Issued. Notice the dates I posted, some take 2-5 yrs before being Issued. Like a Fireman wearing turnout gear to every call, he is prepared for fire even if there isn't one. Manufactures state "Patent Pending" to let others know a Patent has been file so they won't try to file on their product.

It has been many years since I had talked to a fellow South of Modesto, Calif. that had a collection of JOY Pumps. Recently heard that after his passing the collection was sold to the four winds. Does anyone have any info where these pumps went? Pictures of any of them?

Clinton, do you have a picture of the handle that controls the air rams? I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for? Thanks, Don
