Hey guys,

I recently picked up a gallon marker for a visible pump I am restoring. I was not sure of the material and luckily work at a product development consultancy where a colleague who is a material scientist could test the sample. I would like to make the ones I am missing out of the original material as original equipment is just not available. There was a build up that looked like paint but was actually a patina and deposit buildup. The finish looked the same as all the others I have seen. In analyzing the material, which turned out to be 270 yellow/cartridge brass, we also analyzed the build up. It had traces of iron from the castings leaching into the fuel but the bulk of the thick buildup was actually lead deposits from the leaded fuel they were immersed in.

I want you all to know that you should take great care in handling the parts that had direct contact with gas. If you need to handle the gallon markers and they look to be dark green or black in color you should wear gloves and don't sand or buff them out in the open.

Other than that, thanks for all the help I have received in the last few months of having emailed back and forth with you guys. I am learning a lot and having fun finally completing some the pumps I've gathered over the years.

My kids loved to lick the patina off...cheaper than a tootsie pop, but when their teeth come in, you have to give them something else to chew on like a short section of fuel hose. Dave

I used to work in the lead transfer building repairing the lead transfer pump. It pumped the ethyl from the tank car to the storage tanks. We never used any protective gear at that time. My health is still good at 76 (knock on wood), but my memory is shot. MMM you suppose that has any thing to do with it. Mitch
