I picked this firestone sign up at an estate sale. The price was right so I figured I would go ahead and try to clean the paint off. I have never cleaned a painted sign before only porcelain, so I was a little worried.

I tried oven cleaner as my friend that owns a body shop suggested it because he uses it to remove pin stripping. It was not a good idea and ate through the one spot you can see. I tried a few other items but lacquer thinner and paint reducer seemed to be the ticket. About two hours later the end result.

Great Save!!! Came out really nice!
How is it that the thinner only affects the upper most layer of paint and not the original paint?

I am guessing that I just got lucky, but it was a risk I was willing to take. I put it on a rag and wiped with slight force one thin layer at a time. I did not let it sit on the sign.

I was wondering about this as well, maybe a paint "expert" can chime in ? My thought was/is the original paint on these signs is professionally applied and probably baked on (maybe even oil based ? ) therefor "stronger" or more durable than a water based house paint that was brushed over it ? I've had luck as well with a diluted paint thinner mixture and little elbow grease.

...some paints are solved by different thinners...I once removed paint from some 1950's Gunther beer cans that had been made into Christmas decorations...the thinner took the spray paint right off, but did not touch the original paint on the beer cans...

...the thing about oven cleaner is, it's best to have a garden hose nearby and wash off the cleaner frequently...it takes longer to clean the sign that way, but you also don't go 'too far'...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

The Firestone sign is probably baked enamel. This is not porcelain, but it is a good durable finish. I would use extreme caution on these with the thinners and reducers. What worked on one might be disaster on the next The oven cleaner on anything less than porcelain- experiment first.
Your body shop friend probably doesn't use it on repainted vehicles. Just the ones with factory finish.

Doesn't look like the same sign. That really cleaned up nicely.
