Hello All, Since there have been a couple threads in the last few days on new discoveries, I figured I would post mine as well to get a consensus. When I first found this can listed on Ebay I knew it was a can I personally hadn't seen before. I decided to give it my best go as I knew I probably wouldn't have a chance to buy another and I ended up as the lucky winner. It wasn't until after I purchased it that authenticity concerns of a couple other collectors was brought to my attention. The biggest reason for concern was the use of the Gargoyle on the top of the can which didn't add up to some. The can is obviously the same style used for the Gargoyle gallons. I knew an in hand inspection would answer any authenticity questions so I eagerly awaited its arrival. The can finally arrived and I was relieved to find the can was right as rain. Before it arrived I emailed Richard Weir about the can and he replied he felt it was fine. He hadn't seen this can before either and if he were still actively collecting he would have been a bidder. We both agree this can is a very early Marine can and that the manufacturer possibly used some leftover Gargoyle style flats/tops to manufacture these cans, thus the reason for the Gargoyle embossed top. The can was also new to the Hops and a couple other veteran collectors, so I figure there aren't too many of these out there. I thought I would share some photos so others could see the can as well. Darin

As a nouveaux MOBIL collector I sure like it. What year would you date it to? 1928-32?

Not too certain Gasman....Socony-Vacuum wasn't incorporated until 1934, so the can would date after that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's within a couple years of that time frame though.

Great looking can. One thing to find it, another to find it in that condition.

Thanks for the comments guys, it's definitely a jewel in my collection! Intagas, a big thanks for posting a photo of a companion can. I think this style of can was used for a very short time after the Gargoyle design was phased out, and very interesting to see a "blue line" design appear on the same style square gallon. Again, thanks for sharing another new to me can. You think when you're in the hobby for a few years that you've seen it all, but we're proven wrong with some frequency! Darin

That Intagas can pretty much "nails it" as an original. I thought I'd seen cans like that one before.
