I was the lucky guy to get the W71 from Brian R. that was in the junk pile and rusted out, a little while back. There are a few, ahem, parts that I'll be needing to acquire in order to resurrect it. I am planning on buying a wayne 70 for most of the parts I'll be needing. I really am unfamiliar with Wayne 70s as I have never owned one. I'm pretty sure I am going to be asking quite a few questions and I hope some of you guys that know 70s/71s will be willing to help me out.
My first question would be, Are there a few models of 70s? Like models with large sight gauges and models with smaller sight gauges. On one side of the manifold (on my 71) the casting that retains the glass is missing. Just judging from pictures it looks like the sight glass is bigger on my 71 than the pictures of the w70s I've been looking at.
Looking at the photo, is this the typical wayne 70 sight gauge configuration? Also, while Im thinking of it, there is a currently a 8" computer in it-is that correct?

Jim--You need the older type of sight glass assembly. Wayne used these on Wayne 70's very early, and then switched to the more common type that we are all used to.
I'm not familiar enough with the 71's to know which computer came in them, but they were produced from 1938 to 1941 and I would think they would have a 12 inch computer in them. Some of the members on here have done extensive work with them, and hopefully one of them will chime in here.

Here's a picture of the early sight glass Wayne 70. Note these early sight glasses look more like a Tokheim 39 style sight glass. Later Wayne 70 use the common acorn style sight glass.

I am just finishing the last door on one of the two that we did. They are both in primer and polish state. One thing that I can tell you and can not stress enough, is take pictures close up of everything BEFORE you start. This will help extensively. Next is what ever you do, do not straighten the 12 door hinges until you have put the doors on. Mark each one if possible before starting also where it goes. I straightened one pumps hinges only to find out that they are that way for a reason. Joe Yocum rebuilt both of these meters and did a very nice job. Everyone here was very helpful and I too had many missing pieces. If you need an original lower door I do have an extra. As far a repro center and top doors, we had to use two repro center doors and did have to cut and ad to both to get the correct measurement. You will also have to ad or make your own door pieces that the showcase latches go through. The new ones do not have an opening, and you will have to make it like original to use everything correctly. Takes time but looks great when done. If you need some pics I can gladly send what I have.
Good luck, 12 hinges and 6 doors !! Merry Christmas

I have heard from Several & Several times, that Repop pieces Don't fit well. Shame on the manufactures. I'd think anyone willing to spend the time & $$$$ would do it correctly instead of just getting close.

Wow. There are more than I've realized. Thanks Jack. I'm wondering if I should wait and try to find a whole, earlier one or if it would be best just to grab the first decent four ad glass pump and then go after the two earlier sight glass assemblies when I find them. Just throwing this out there,- Having not payed any attention to these differences in models in the past, would you guys (any one who is familiar with 70s) say earlier models (with the sight gauges I'm looking for) common, not so common, or harder to find , in general, than the later models?

I have had quite a few Wayne 70 pumps with the larger sight glass in them. I am sure that if you were patient you could find the right sight glass manifold.

In the defense of the manufacturer of these parts, they are close, I am just kind of anal about it. I would rather have something to work with than nothing at all. I know from experience in the hobby that you make the part and it is not a money making experience. I used to make the plastic lenses for 15 years for the MS pumps and you would be surprised to find out how many different tops were out there saying the same thing. Had to change the mold on two of the lenses because so many tops had the writing just spread out a little further than others.

I was just happy someone was making some of the parts for this pump as well as others.

Those early sight glass's are not nearly as plentiful as the later ones, but they do show up occasionally.
You will need a bunch of patience to complete this pump, so take your time and get the proper pieces, and everything will go a lot smoother. Shouldn't take over 2 to 3 years! LOL

I have squirreled away about 40 Wayne 70's into my retirement fund. Out of the 40 pumps, 5 are the large site glass version 70's.

Thanks for rubbing it in Dave. It would be a record for me if it only takes a couple years-really. lol. I am a bit excited and its good advise to slow down a bit Kevin. Thanks. It would be great though, if I could find one by the time Columbus rolls around. (Not Christopher Columbus)I would love to be bringing one home with me.
