This sure didn't last long. It's a pretty darn good price assuming they got it for say $800. However, I fear someone has bought a fake. Excluding the one obvious fake that is often seen, I've seen several different examples of this sign and I'm just not comfortable with this one. The peripheral cut doesn't look straight and tangent and look at the blue border around the figures white circles. Their not concentric. Just to mention a couple things. The bracket looks good, but where would you get a bracket without a sign? I have one picture of what I truly believe to be the real deal. And although these signs are a puzzle to me, there are certain details to look for. This one just aint cutting it. I did also notice that the seller cleverly leaves the word "original" only associated with the bracket. Hmm.... 271465831437 http://www.ebay.com/itm/271465831437

I'm not sure I've seen this particular form either but I wouldnt have a fear of it not being authentic. Looks good to me. 800.00 is a good price for one now? wow. It is in excellent shape.

Sorry Rick. Not right now. I wont buy one of these signs for some time. Not until my jury comes in on what exactly is an original.
Jim, Take a look at this sign in the first picture. Notice the mans hand on the stick. And notice how perfect the blue rings around the figures are. There are other things within this first pictured sign that I like making me believe this one to be authentic. Maybe they all are and there are just differences.
I just dont know. But I would not have bought this one in the second picture that sold last night.

Bob, that is of course the repop that I spoke of that is often seen on ebay. Of course it doesn't even factor in.
Rick, Hmm... You say guaranteed so who am I to argue. For the sake of record, how is it that you can guarantee this? Your sign has some of the characteristic that have caused nothing but confusion for me when it comes to these signs. I've seen your version before on original brackets.(see picture 4). I just dont understand the differences I run into on these signs. Their subtle but lets take a look and compare your sign to the one that I said I believed to be authentic. And lets hope the repo artists dont see this. And let me first say that I pulled this picture from ebay about a year or so ago. And the only reason I thought it to be authentic is because this sign has the best detail of any I have ever studied.
A = Ricks sign B = Steve's reference sign
1.The mans hand. A) Notice how in sign A the mans arm/hand is one constant thickness as it passes through the walking stick. Actually almost even growing larger and bulbes as it passes through the stick. B) Notice how in sign B there is actually a narrowing of the arm as it passes through the stick.
2. The mans shoes and pant cuffs Notice how much pointier the shoes are on sign A. In the close up you can see that sign B has a much more distinct cuff to the bottom of the pant leg.
3. The R's The lower extended tips of the R's appear slightly longer and sharper on sign B.
4. The ruffles on skirt Their just completely different from sign A to sign B
5. Umbrella The tip touches the ring on sign B. It does not on sign A.
6.The lettering Overall, the lettering on sign B seems to be slightly thinner than the lettering on sign A. Look at the tips of the small s's.
There are other subtle differences throughout the man and woman figures and the signs. And of course the blue color is completely different on these two examples. In my opinion the darker seemingly more consistant with other signs from the period in which these signs were used. But who knows. I'm as far from an expert as can be. I've just put a bit of time into looking at these signs every time I see one. I want to own a set some day. I just dont understand these differences that I so consistently see. Could it be that these are just variations in manufacturing? Is it the result of different manufactures having made the signs over time? I have no idea.
Rick, does your sign have a manuf. code on the other side? This A698 or A598 or...?
So that's some of my story. It's a mouth full. And these are only 2 examples. Does anyone know who made signs for Sunoco using this 4 digit alpha/numeric (A698) coding. You see it a lot on there signs. Are they still in buiness?

Yes it has the stamp, I know where my sign came from, I've been collecting for a long time and both color shades have always been around. Do you know how many red variations I have seen on Mobil signs.
Steve I do believe you are way over analyzing these signs and driving yourself crazy, Slow down and enjoy the hobby. By the time your convinced all these signs are the real deal you will have passed up on many deals and these signs will be bringing $1500+, and not only in Jersey.
