I don't know enough about these sunray signs to know if this is the "REAL McCoy" or not?
I've always wanted one but I have repop fear when I'm in the dark like this.
Anyone know for sure, one way or another? Sunray Sign

Kevin:
All of these that I have ever been able to confirm were part of a group of fantasy signs offered by Weber's in the mid-1970s. These signs were not marked, as no one ever consider the problem of reproduction or fantasy items back then, and are now 40 years old are so. I cannot find photographic evidence that ANY signs of this design and size were ever used, at any Sunray or DX facility and consider ALL of them in this size to be fantasy.

Kevin,
I have an original and grommet to grommet measures 8 inches.Grommets on questioned sign look a little large.I never knew them to be used as pump plates. My sign came from a piping and metering station within my county.I remain somewhat skeptical of this one.Sure looks good though.

To all:
Allow me to make a correction, clarify poor wording. What I meant to say is that "I cannot find photographic evidence that ANY signs of this design and size were ever used, at any Sunray or DX" STATION. What I do have evidence of is that curb sign sized octagon shaped Sunray DX signs were placed along company operated pipelines. These signs are often considered curb signs, but all that we have ever seen old photos of were actually mounted along pipe sections. I can certainly see the possibility that smaller signs like this one being used at production or refining facilities, as this was a corporate image, not a marketing image, which was the DX brand alone. However, if not pure fantasy, then at least be aware that this sign was reproduced in the 1970s.

Wayne,

What do you mean by:

1- Corporate image
2- Marketing image

Thanks,

Hen

Thank you so much to all that have replied! It seems like every day that I am able to learn more and more and at the same time, realize just how little that I know yet!
I am so thankful that we have this site where we can access the knowledge of so many avid collectors of these artifacts!
Again--Thank you for all the responses, it means the world to me!

I'd bet it was cut from another sign [6.5" x 6.5"], but would have to see edges to be SURE.

A corporate image encompasses the official corporate name and or logo. In this case Sunray DX Oil Company and the Sunray DX logo was used for limited purposes (production, pipeline) and between 1955 (merger) and 1959 (new logo) on the sign in question. However, DX was the gasoline brand and used only the diamond logo image, the earlier version before 1959, the newer after 1959.
Another example comes from Standard of New Jersey. They consolidated all of their marketing in 1959 into Humble Oil and Refining. Standard continued to exist, and was involved in many businesses that did not involve refining and marketing gasoline. And Humble had, until that time, been both a corporate subsidiary and a brand used in Texas and surrounding states. In 1959, however, the word Humble, the corporate logotype, was added to gas stations, although stations continued to be Esso station, or in limited locations Humble stations, or Carter, or Enco, or any of the other brands used in this era. You could have a Humble Oil Esso station, a Humble Oil Humble station, a Humble Oil Enco stations, etc. An example continues today, same company, as corporate facilities display the ExxonMobil logotype, identifying the corporation, but stations are individually Exxon or Mobil stations.
One additional example, and one you are no doubt familiar with, is Cities Service. The Citgo brand was introduced in 1965, replacing the Cities Service gasoline brand. However, the corporate name, for all divisions other than branded gasoline marketing, continued in use until 1983 or so. Cities Service sold out to Occidental Chemical, but the Citgo subsidiary was sold off to Southland Corporation and PVDSA.
I know it is confusing, and every one is different, but I hope this helps clear up the corporate vs marketing image question.

Thank you, Wayne!

I must admit ... If it you had not used the "Exxon" as one of the examples, I would still be just as confused as before.

BTW, I enjoy reading your articles in PCM magazine month after month!

Regards,

Hen
