Recently Scott Benjamin had a Penreco globe for sale and having never really heard of the company before, or seen it's logo before, it prompted me to dig a little deeper regarding the history. Well, according to my research, apparently Penreco was the predecessor in the 1915 range to Pennzoil and eventually later on to Penn Drake, yet remains in business still today under the calumet brand. Anyway, the logo is what is intriguing to me, yet with so few items still around, it is difficult to pin down exactly what it is based off of. My best guess is that it is a Pennsylvania Quaker and from searching images of Quakers, I am reasoning that it is based off of a likeness of William Penn (founder of Pennsylvania) and that the scroll is loosely likened to him holding the treaty formed with Indians at shackamaxon in the founding of Philadelphia. Yet, I really have no idea and a search on old gas or google shows no real clear images of the penreco logo or it's history. So, does anyone have any info on penreco or a clear image from a can or anything to corroborate what I think it is? Just fishing with not much bait on the hook I know, but any thoughts or images from this company's past would satisfy my curiosity. Thanks.
Kevin

According to my research, in 1916 the Pennsylvania refining company trademarked "pennzoil". Pencoil is unfamiliar, but certainly seems more a blend of the two names and more fitting of a match.
