I will try to explain the I.D. Tag restore process. Pretty simple.

The tag you start with has to be perfectly straight. Any dents or bends you try to correct will show. I.D. tags have what I will call 'relief'---raised letters and numbers. A good candidate for restoring, the relief can be felt with your fingers. The Tokheim 39 and 300 tags are poor. Some tags are better than others.
You can completely strip the tag if it has lots of paint from numerous paint jobs. But a good as found pump tag can generally just be sanded down on a very flat surface until the raised letters and numbers are shiny clean. I don't worry about the old black paint in the back ground.I then spray with gloss black from a rattle can. Let it dry very well. Then, again on a very smooth surface, wet sand it down with 320 or what ever you have thats not too rough. Go slow and keep looking at it. When the high spots are shiny, you're done. Don't worry, the back ground black with not look great. Then I shoot it with whatever I have in clear. That will bring the back ground back to a nice looking finish. They are not perfect and that adds to your project I believe. Good Luck

Larry
