Picked this up the other day and was wondering if anyone happens to know what this might of been used for? I'm guessing it's a demonstration display, but just not sure why a demonstration would be needed and for whom. Does have a hand crank for manual operation and can take batteries for hands free demos. Kind of a neat piece, not sure if it's a one off construction or a limited number of these were made. Certainly not a mass produced item.

The advance and retard buttons suggest to me that it demonstrated the effects of Knocking (also called knock, detonation, spark knock, pinging). Which the Ethyl Corporation made chemicals to reduce/prevent.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like it wasn't a salesman piece anyway, but for educational purposes or maybe even job fairs.
