Repop made from ink blotter art work is what I was told long ago. Certainly sounds and appears like a very reasonable explanation!!! This may be a slightly naive statement, but that shiny metal back sure doesn't look period to me at all.

Ink blotter art work. Date on back is out of place and would 99 out of 100 times only be the last two digits of date for year.
