I have seen reproduction globes with "Ford Sales Service" on them before. I was curious if these were based on a real globe, or just a fantasy item. If they were real, when would they have been used, what brand gas, pump colors, what would they be worth, etc? Thanks guys.

Achimedes, I believe I read on the PCM web last week on the repro warning page about car globes. IIRC, most are fakes, but I have seen a couple of original Ford globes. Both were one piece glass. One on this website: http://jerseygaspumps.tripod.com/ look at the gas pump page.
One "Ford BENZOL" on a picture in a book about Gilbarco. This one had the shape of a clam (well almost).
regards,
Claes

The plastic or glass body Ford Sales and Service globes are fake. The originals are one piece glass and are extremely rare.

The Mustang globe is fake.

The Ford Benzol keyhole globes are extremely rare. There is a Benzol capco globe too.

The globe books by Benjamin and Henderson aren't perfect, but they are very good. The pricing is outdated now but they are a great resource for company histories, info on affiliates, dates, etc. Every petro collector should have a set of these books.

Thanks for the info guys, and yes I had seen Jerseys site before, an incredible collection is an understatement. Any one have an idea about the paint scheme for Ford pumps in the late 30's-early 40's? Would it have been like Enco, white doors blue body?

An old thread returns...

Given the rarety of original Ford globes, what's your guess/estimate on the "retail" or trade value for one? Comparible to one-piece Texaco or etched Sinclair globes, or as valuable to the average collector as a rare Seaside.

Curious about the ballpark value or comparible value.

Thanks...

Brian

Thats a hard one Brian, the ol Ford globes are harder to find then some , they only used them at some of the dealerships from what I understand , how do you put a price on some thing you can't see or find, for exsample: would you pay $1,000.00 for a repo globe?? no . well the original Sunset went on ebay for over $10,000.00, a repo just sold for a little over $1,000.00. but when it was first made it only sold for 300.00.
as far as Seaside there not as costly as the Sunset , but you can't find them either ,
thats why if you want a repo you better buy now only 25will be made until the collectors ask for more , but the price might be higher then , we'll see,

Bobby you are correct. CTO's September and November 2002 issues carried the articles on Ford Neighborhood Quick Service Stations. These were started during the Depression to help supplement the Ford Dealers income as new car sales were way down. Several pics are shown of the pumps and some have globes, but I can't tell much about the globes. If I remember the article correctly, other brands of gas, like Sinclair, was also sold alongside Ford Benzol. I wish the pics were a little larger. There is a neat pic of a trio of Erie cash recorder pumps.

I thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth on this topic. Keep this in mind, the "experts" are not always right and have not always done the proper reasearch. I discovered recently that some glass bodied, glass lens automotive globes did exist and were made. A friend who collects neon auto signs called and wanted to know what I thought a glass-bodied Oldsmobile globe was worth, I said "About 80 bucks as the "experts" said they never existed. He said I was wrong and sent me a copy of a 1938 Olds dealer sign catalog with a picture of the globe in it for the service entrance. The cost--$4.20!! plus $2.85 for the cast iron wall bracket! I was amazed but remembered seeing one at Dixie gas last year that looked old but passed because of what I had read by the experts. Luckily, I was able to call the seller who still had it and was able to purchase it. I now have documentation it existed and a cool globe to boot. Everyone needs to do their own research and not just believe everything they here because anything is possible. I believe if Oldsmobile did it, then why not Chevy, Ford, and Dodge etc..? In fact, another copy of the catalog is on e-bay right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3600974430&category=10777

About 5 months ago we talked about globes for different adds, taxi stands ,bus pick ups, and as I said then , a lot of stores used them for address numbers and addvertising , but they were all or most 16" flat for the store fronts, we havn't seen everything yet. look at the globes ol Dick Bennet drags out now and then great stuff, or little fat dwaines stuff ,or sam Bleakly, or pogo, theres stuff out there we've never seen , but aren't we have'en fun .

I'm shy to say that I dont subscribe to CTO, though I know I should.

Anybody care to fax me the article? Would it be archieved on-line or anything where I might be able to see the pics you refer to from 10/02 or 11/02? I doubt they were color photos (though perhaps)... I wonder of the color combination and if they were a "national standard".

I'm mostly interested in the FORD BENZOL 3-pc globe.

Learning from this string of posts the reason why Ford dealer sold gas is a cool thing to know.
