My mistake... I did not convey properly, what I was trying to express...

I was not talking about a potential Buyer of an item, when I wrote: "How can anyone expect, Non-Collectors to have any idea if an item is "real" or not????"

I was talking about ebay Customer Service Reps, stopping an Auction because someone contacts them and/or reports an item...

None of the ebay CSR are Petro Collectors and even if they were; If we here on Oldgas, can't agree on an item's authenticity. And we are the one's who are suppose to "be in the know".... How can we complain, if a ebay CSR takes the Sellers description as the truth?

The Buyer should always be the one who is always doubting the veracity of Seller's pedigree on an item...Therefore, it is up to the Buyer to do more than a cursory scan of prior sales for a Seller and/or a scan of similar items being sold on ebay...

Or atleast that is what I do... I am on a budget, as is, I believe most Buyers... I want to be as sure as possible before I hand my money over to someone else....

Bob, I stated that to a degree, e-bay is to blame. I still stand by that. There is much more e-Bay could choose to do if they really wanted to curb the sales of repro/fantasy signs as originals. At the end of the day, their interest is in gross sales and net profits and that is their only motivation.

Their entire business model is based on that bias. How many reports does it take to get a sign removed and even after numerous reports most auctions still end with bids still in place. Do you really believe, that's all e-Bay can and should do? I can assure you that, if this was somehow costing them money or cutting into their profits they would have figured out a way to eliminate this problem.

If someone, willingly chooses to ignore or overlook the obvious and over time allow themselves to become a conduit for others to conduct shady transactions. Then, in my opinion, they are part of the problem. It is taking place under their watch and with their knowledge.

For me, e-bays lack of action to curb this situation is akin to complicity. Don't kid yourself into believing that nothing can be done about this or that e-Bay is a fine outstanding corporate citizen driven by your best interests at heart. Money is the the driving force here...not what's best for you and me!

IF it cut deep enough into ebay & CEO's pockets, they would do something about it. WE aren't even a grain of sand.

Recently in New York a couple of art dealers were arrested and have been sentenced to prison for selling fake Renoir paintings. They had hired a Chinese man to paint the art then sold the fakes through their art gallery. They paid the artist $500 to $2000 for his work. They made millions over a few years before they were caught.
In my opinion I don't see any difference from what they did and what these crooks on ebay are getting away with. If some of these guys would get arrested and prosecuted for selling fakes maybe this problem would be seriously addressed by ebay.

Scott, Shell never made a yellow pump plate. The real one is red--4 grommets--made in USA at the bottom on some not all.

" Not doubting everyones knowledge, but what are the signs this is fake?".......
Experience, research, and listening to other experienced collectors. The sign in question is for sale in many places for 19.95 and really doesn't look any thing like a Shell sign that is real. These Shell signs have been covered extensively here in previous discussions and posts. Even without OLDGAS, researching just eBay would give someone a pretty good idea about the authenticity of this sign. But, there are still those who will buy first, ask later. Not trying to jump on you Scott, just making a point.

I must have been sleeping in front of the compter again! I thought I was replying to a post about a Mohawk plate that was on ebay & the bidding was over $200.

Thank you
Scott
