Does anyone have pictures a Mobil station that has checkered Pegasus flags flying? I have been searching all morning can't seem to find one yet.

As far as I'm aware the checkered flags were used in the racing world, for their obvious intended purpose and frequently given to race winners. Mobil was very visibly involved in the racing scene, such as the Indy 500, etc. They were used for the Economy Runs as well. I've never seen a photo of a station just using them as decorations personally, but I guess they could have.

There's a few versions I believe. I have one like this 24x24 roughly in size with 16 squares not 25. I wonder where it was used and what time era? I know the Pegasus started around 1940 right?

Here is a Mobilgas image; I'm not sure if it is at a track or at an endurance run? Shows a race driver in coveralls displaying a Mobilgas flag, that resides on a General Petroleum Bulk Truck...

I see that there is a copy of this image on ebay: # 231295340522

Bob, that photo was taken at Ascot Speedway, in Los Angeles. Can't quite tell who the driver is (holding the flag).

Anthony, I believe your flag dates from '50s-60s. I am not aware of them using the checkered flag until after their merger with Gilmore. Could be wrong though.

The Pegasus image was used long before 1940's by General.

I have some pictures of Mobil stations with the race flags, but I don't think it was company advertising to do so. Just owners putting them up outside, or due to some racing event.

Oh man it's starting to make sense now. I bet these flags were attached to tankers that supplied fuel for economy run's and racing. Thanks for the Photo Bob!

More likely that kids picked them up at gas stations and race tracks.

Just like most Gilmore flags you see on ebay. Most of these weren't around when the company was in business. They were souvenirs from the race track, in the late '40s-'50. Like this one... Gilmore flag signed by midget race drivers

they also were used at the economy runs that automobile co.s would enter to judge their miles per gallon.

Yes, Economy Runs too. I considered that a race. Mobil revived the Economy Run ( previously run by Gilmore 1936-1941) in 1950.

A flag that was run on a tanker, unless only for a promotional event, would end up being tattered from the wind. I have to assume very few of them lasted very long and exist today.

So your guess is that all the flags were souvenirs?

Never said "ALL", Anthony. Regarding the Mobil flag in question, there are TONS of these out there. Why? Because kids kept them, not truck drivers or station owners. Yes, some did. If I have to "guess" as to why there are so many out there, I'd have to say kids kept them. I'm sure most would agree.

Regarding the Gilmore flag I linked to that sold on ebay... The reason I know it is from the Gilmore Stadium is because all the signatures are of midget drivers. The reason I believe it might be postwar is because of a few of drivers' names. I am not aware of some of them racing prewar. That helps me date it. Gilmore Stadium suspended racing in 1942 and resumed in 1946.

If I had seen the flag without signatures, I would have thought it to be Gilmore Oil Co., it's hard to date these. But, since I see the drivers signatures, I "guess" that it likely isn't of the company era.

Hope that helps.

I was offered one for 300 that the gentleman has had since he got it when he was 17 and the original poll was with it not sure but I got the idea he "commandeered?" it from a station.

I am not a Mobil expert. I remember the local Mobil Station in Polson, MT had some checkered flags like the one above on the right as a display in front of the building. Had a three flag holder attached to the building and the flags fell away from the building at a 45 degree angle.

They were also seen at the hydro races (Copper Cup Regatta)on the river outside of town. We used to have a race boat and this would have been in the 1966-69 era. I ended up with one of the flags...(souvenir)that I had for a few years. I don't know if Mobil was still using the Pegasus then or not. Maybe they were just leftovers and were used up.

Alex, did Texaco ever use a checkered flag like these? I don't recall ever seeing one.

I just watched American Pickers tonight and the guys bought what looked like a 36 inch one for $200 at Rocco and Cheaters Speed Shop in ALabama. The owner said he grabbed it from the track.
