I picked up two pair of Pure Premium ad glass for a National A38 this week.

How scarce are the A38 pumps?

It seems from posts that they aren't common even in rougher-restorable condition.

LOL, yeah but having lived in Texas that probably means there is like one for every 500 square miles.

More male survivors than female so breeding can't be increased.

I think its more a question of: How scarce are the B-38 pumps? That's when it becomes a challenge.

On the west coast, they're out there. Not a common pump but can still be had.

B-38 were Commercial & FEWER were made/sold.
MOST want to believe after 1934 & use of VR's that Dial Pumps are older versions of newer pumps. Not true, they are CHEAPER Versions of newer pumps.
To use the VR Calculator, pump companies had to buy the VRs from Veeder-Root, even WAYNE & they had a vested interest in VR. By using a Dial [clockface] they could cut the price by some.
After 1934 ome cities forbid the installing of new pumps for retail sales that did not have the VR installed in them.

They come up quite offten out here. There is one on craigs list right now in my area. One year at the West Coast Gas Bash (Fred Stokes) there were eight at one time.

You don't see many in Montana...for what that is worth. I have seen Texaco ad glass for them and wondered if it was fantasy or if Texaco used them. have never seen a station picture with them.....

For what it's worth, seller told me, this pump came from an airport and was an original survivor Fire-Chief pump. It had original pump plates on it. I put reproduction ad glass in it.

I'm sure, I have been lied to by sellers in the past to effect a sale.

Used to see them at most shows...not so much anymore. They are without a doubt my favorite pump.

At Iowa Gas, I was talking to a guy about A38s ans A1s...

He said an A38 is like a Chevy and the A1 was like a Cadillac. I tend to agree and really like both.

But yeah, the A1 is in league of its own...

I hate putting the doors back on after being painted. Richard
