I was going to put this is Great Old Pics but I felt it may need more discussion than that thread is intended for.
My first question is, why MobilOIL plates on a gas pump?
And, I've never seen these plates before. Any info would be interested to say the least.

Hi Steve Great Pic. I believe these are decals. This, I believe would have been at the early transition to the Socony Shield. I have never seen a pump plate like them either. I would love to find one if they do exist. Thanks.

Decals as far as I'm aware, I've never heard of or seen this design as an actual pump plate. These decals are very common on Mobilgas pumps in the early 1930's. I would surmise the reasoning for MobilOIL is that you were already purchasing gas from the pumps, so why not advertise S-V's oil products to the captive audience.

On a side note, I've seen a photo of the 12" porcelain Mobiloil plate from the 1940's being used on a gas pump as well. I had always thought it was more of a oil dispenser/"lubester" plate but evidently some owners put them on pumps as well, probably for the same reason, to promote oil products at the pump.

This is all I have left of that pump. I sort of wish I never sold it.

Using google maps, I was able to find the building!
Here is the full picture from back then, and then it today.
I wonder if the current owner has any idea?

It wasn't easy to find. All I had to go by was the name of the town in Pa. Lukily it was a samll town and area. I figured a building like that has to still be there. So I starting zooming in on the satelite view and street view, almost drove right by it! But stopped and looked back, and there it was.

These vinyl versions have been on Ebay for quite some time. Ebay item 161394074590. I personally do not like the look of vinyl and sure wish some water slide decals would be made of this design, as I think they would sell quite well personally. They would look nice on visibles as well as any pump made pre-1940 or so being restored to Mobil.

You should send a copy of the old gas station to that address. The current resident probably has no idea and would get a kick out of it. Tell them to search the attic for old signs also. wink

Yep, that owner definitely needs to see that picture. Never know, they may have a ghost that looks like a gas station attendant creeping around there at night, LOL! The pumps appear to be Pennsylvania Clockface pumps also. Cool stuff!

I believe Doc had some artwork done for that decal a few years back, may have had some decals done - I have thought about letting T-way do some for me...but of course, water slides would be better.
