Hello All,

Can anyone tell me about this sign? It's 18 inches wide X 6 ft. tall. I was hoping to date it, but don't know what the numbers and letters mean.

Thank you,

Orlando

Atlas was a brand originally created through Goodyear so it's been around a long time. Your sign is one of several similar I've seen this year, most dating to 40's/50's The 'g' code is likely for style/shape of sign. Someone else can chime in on the mfg name as it escapes me right now. It's not a scarce or rare sign, but the contrast between red white and black is decent enough for many garage collectors to pick them up.

A fellow had a slightly nicer one two weeks ago at a swap meet for $275 and I had a much better one sell for $350.

Thank you for the information. It gives me a better idea of what I brought home. I find it to be a nice addition to the small collection in my garage.

The Atlas Corporation, was NOT created by Goodyear Tire...

It was a division of the Standard Oil Company

From the Standard Oil History:

"The former Standards banded together in 1930 to form the Atlas Corporation, maker of tires, batteries, and other automotive accessories (TBA) that were provided to Standard and Standard-related stations of all stripes from the Atlantic to the Pacific."

Here is a "blurb" from 1992 on EXXON dropping the Atlas TBA line from their Stations...:

Like Bob said, Atlas had nothing to do with Goodyear. Atlas was formed by Standard of New Jersey (ESSO), Standard of Ohio (SOHIO), Standard of Indiana, and Standard of California.
The early Atlas signs had white and blue diagonal stripes on the upper right and lower left corners. I suspect your sign is post war, and likely from the early 50's. Later, and I'm not sure of the time frame, Atlas signs were lighter shades of red and blue.

Thank you for the updated info. The black is actually a blue color. I did Google Atlas signs and did see the white and blue diagonal stripes on the upper and lower corners in photos.

As you can see, the sign is very straight, but is faded and has some surface rust. I like it and looks good in the garage.

Thanks again.

Atlas was a sold in Canada as well by Imperial/Esso. Their signs are found frequently for sale.
