I would never attempt to grade a sign that wasn't physically in front of me. To many variables that can't be confirmed i.e. touch up or restoration and ect.

I would never attempt to grade a sign that wasn't physically in front of me. To many variables that can't be confirmed i.e. touch up or restoration and ect. Been thinking this as well. The purpose of grading a sign is primarily to benefit those who cannot physically touch the sign themselves. Not the other way around. A very nice sign nonetheless.

Finally Tally. There were only 13 members that chose to voice an opinion, thanks to those of you that participated. The "grades" ranged from 8 - 9.5. The average of all was 8.8. Goes to show how we all look at things differently.

If we are going to crunch numbers. As of now there have been 746 views and only 13 members graded the sign.
I would read out of that; that the majority of them didn't agree that it was possible to grade an item based on a few pictures.

Perhaps u are right or they didn't want to voice an opinion. Sometimes a pic is all u have to rely on. Then again maybe it was a dumb post on my part.

I don't think it was a dumb post at all. What is hard to do is grade a sign that you wish to sell the same as you grade one that you just bought. What you proved was, that the people who did grade it had a little different opinion of the grade of the same sign. That can equal to a lot of money either way. Another reason to buy what you like, from people you can trust or has dealt with a person you know.

Shorty - U are on the money. My purpose was to illustrate that we all see things differently. I think I accomplished that. The eye of the beholder kind of thing. Thanks for chiming in.

Like mentioned already, the guy from Mattews auction seems to grade really consistently. I don't think grading a sign is really all that necessary, take a bunch of photos, close-ups, and let people decide what they are willing to pay for it.
