I am curious as to how different people look at a sign and attach a grade number to it. I am posting a pic of a sign and would like to get peoples opinions. Please send me a PM with your thoughts as to not influence others. I will post the consensus opinion this weekend.

Thanks

I would say this particular sign is a MS62 could grade higher if you have close up's of the porcelain. Any touch up's?

Yes just joking, There isn't a "real scale" anywhere. At least I haven't seen one out there. I think most guys grade on a 1-10 scale. With 10 being near perfection no porcelain loss, high gloss looking nearly new. 1 being a barn hanger with holes, bearly depictable and lots of damage.

That is a nice looking sign... I had to do some research on the Company after seeing the image... I don't remember ever having an item from the Anderson-Prichard Oil Company....

Thanks for sharing!

Yes that is pre APCO with that said I have yet to see a perfect 10, with a 10 being no chips at all and day one shine with no fading. If that one has a few chips and no touch up a solid 8 IMO.

I am always looking for anything Texaco or Oklahoma oil and gas company's, also I am a newbie at seeking globes.

There was an excellent 1 to 10 explanation published in an old Collector's Auction catalog, can't find mine but maybe someone has it?

In the front of Dan Mathews book, "The Fine Art of Collecting & Displaying Petroliana" there is a very good grading scale. His scale goes in half point increments from 10 to 5, for a total of 7 catagories. 10-9.5, 9.4-9.0, 8.9-8.5, 8.4-8.0, ... down to a 5.0-or less. Giving each step a good discription and a picture. Very good scale and great reference book.

I would grade this sign a 9.5 Based on your pictures,
Very close to like new condition with original luster to the porcelain but with a slight amount of damage, light scratches or small chips to non-critical sections of the image area . Small edge nicks in limited numbers that could be found.

IMO.

I would never attempt to grade a sign that wasn't physically in front of me. To many variables that can't be confirmed i.e. touch up or restoration and ect.

Been thinking this as well. The purpose of grading a sign is primarily to benefit those who cannot physically touch the sign themselves. Not the other way around.

A very nice sign nonetheless.

Finally Tally. There were only 13 members that chose to voice an opinion, thanks to those of you that participated. The "grades" ranged from 8 - 9.5. The average of all was 8.8. Goes to show how we all look at things differently.

If we are going to crunch numbers. As of now there have been 746 views and only 13 members graded the sign.

I would read out of that; that the majority of them didn't agree that it was possible to grade an item based on a few pictures.

Perhaps u are right or they didn't want to voice an opinion. Sometimes a pic is all u have to rely on. Then again maybe it was a dumb post on my part.

I don't think it was a dumb post at all. What is hard to do is grade a sign that you wish to sell the same as you grade one that you just bought. What you proved was, that the people who did grade it had a little different opinion of the grade of the same sign. That can equal to a lot of money either way. Another reason to buy what you like, from people you can trust or has dealt with a person you know.

Shorty - U are on the money. My purpose was to illustrate that we all see things differently. I think I accomplished that. The eye of the beholder kind of thing. Thanks for chiming in.

Like mentioned already, the guy from Mattews auction seems to grade really consistently. I don't think grading a sign is really all that necessary, take a bunch of photos, close-ups, and let people decide what they are willing to pay for it.
