I picked up this sign a few weeks ago. Its a double sided Spur Sign. Was this a pump plate?

This is indeed a pump plate. Spur used porcelain panels to cover the lower pump doors, various styles beginning in 1962 and lasting into the early 1980s. This one dates from the 1970s.

If it was a pump plate why would it be double sided ?

That's what they are! I have some of these older versions which the porcelain oval Spur's hung on. Here is also a pump out in the wild with them in use. Not sure why they were double sided unless they just wanted 1 plate and owner could flip depending on what side he wanted to use. I have seen a pump using Joey's plate in a fashion similar to the one I have pictured.

Spur used several examples of "dual purpose" signs, oddly configured back-to-back. The better known example was the No Stamps/Premium panel that was an added to their price sign. The Save panel was used for certain limited time promotions, and the sign would be turned around at that time. I have single sided examples of both sides of the sign, as well. There are several sizes, sized to popular pump doors.
