First off, I do know the photo shown is of a repro Standard Oil bottle. I lifted it off eBay, so I could quickly post this question tonight.

I'd like to know the correct location of the metal collar at the bottle top, which identifies the specific oil product (Iso-Vis 40W in the photo).

I have seen original metal collars placed on the outside of the bottle neck (as in the photo)....and I've also seen original collars installed on the inside of the neck. Actually, I always thought inside the neck was the proper configuration. However, a couple of recent photos showing the collar on the outside now have me puzzled.

Thanks in advance for any comments, Gang. John

Quick outside snap on identification of the contents of the bottle. Think about it--would you want some old metal tag inside the bottle that your oil was coming from? You'd want it as clean as possible without the tag.
Inside is a good place to put the tag to prevent theft during an auction or sales event.
