Seller wrote me this:

Hi Doug, thanks for the e-mail. First of all I would have never listed this sign if I didn't feel that it was an authentic Texaco Credit Cards Honored sign from 1936. The sign is made out of the correct heavy metal that they used, the red and green colors are right and the #'s and date (36) all appear to be correct. I purchased this sign last Saturday at a very large and advanced gas & oil sign and memorabilia auction that was a lifetime collection of a man that had recently passed away. There was some very high priced items there and a lot of astute buyers. I paid a lot of money for this sign and looked it over pretty good before I decided to bid on it. I was also skeptical of the Texaco stickers?? and felt them and tried to pick at them before the auction. They wouldn't pick off like a sticker that we know today. Texaco has changed the "star" logo over the years and the logo is from the year that is dated on the sign (36). I grew up in a gas & oil family as my grandpa had 3 different stations (White Rose, Cities Service, & Amoco) my dad and uncle had 2 stations (Amoco & American) and my brother and I had 2 (Amoco & Citgo) , so I have seen plenty of signs in my time. We are currently cleaning out our last station and getting ready for an auction as we are retiring from the business. Sunday we found a Quaker State "tombstone" sign with stand and unopened hardware kit still in the original cardboard box hidden in the rafters of the building. I set up at the recent
big Indy Ad Show in Indianapolis in September and sold a lot of signs that other dealers bought from me and immediately put on ebay and doubled there money on a lot of the signs. So if you can see by my past I am not one of the people that are on ebay trying to skam people with reproduction pieces. By the way there were
absolutely no reproduction items allowed in the Indy Ad show. I didn't really know what you meant in your e-mail when you said that the sign is a fake and it is not an original sign. The sign is no doubt real and the colors, date, etc. are all correct. The only question I ever had about the sign was the stickers??. If this sign was a reproduction (which I know it's not) you would see a lot of them offered for sale.
Thanks, Rick

This was my interaction with him....

Dear 63shelby,

Hi, thanks for the e-mail. I purchased this sign last Sat. at a large advanced gas & oil auction that was the lifetime collection of a man that recently passed away.
There was a lot of high dollar items in the sale and a lot of astute buyers. I paid a lot for this sign at the auction and looked it over really good before I bid on it. The
metal that it is made of along with the colors, date, etc. all look to be correct. The only thing that I questioned was the stickers??. I tried to pick at them and they are different than stickers like we see today that would pick right off. Texaco has changed the star logo over the years and this logo matches the year (36) on the sign.
As for this possibly being an old Sinclair sign the green is too dark (olive) and the red is more of a burgundy like Texaco uses. The pictures on ebay make the letters look more red than they are. I guess what I am trying to say is the colors are just like Texaco colors with the darker green & red than Sinclair used. Sinclair used a brighter green & red than what this sign is. As for the sign possibly being cut, this sign in no way looks to have been cut or tampered with. I set up in late Sept. a few weeks ago at the big Indy Ad Show in Indianapolis and sold a lot of signs that other dealers bought and put on ebay and have doubled there money on. There were
absolutely no reproductions allowed in the building at this Indy show. I would have no way listed this sign if I felt that it was not a real Texaco sign.
Thanks, Rick

That sign was at an auction in Youngstown Oh this past weekend. I wasn't there but a close friend attended & was looking at some items for me. They had a 42" DSP Texaco there that had a black stripe surrounding the T on one side that was added on. He also told me some of the signs he wasn't sure of. We are not experts on this stuff by any means, he went with his gut & I think he saved me some $ !!!! I told him just to see what the stuff sold for.

More from the seller.

Hi Doug, there is a website that pictures all of the changes of the Texaco logo thru the years. It pictures the logo on this sign as the last year to be in 1936. These stickers will come off and I believe they were added at some point but the actual sign is a real metal painted sign from 1936. It could possibly be from Sinclair but
the colors are exactly that of Texaco. Texaco's colors were a little darker green & red than Sinclair. The pictures on ebay look a little more red than the writing on the sign.
Thanks, Rick

I got to the auction kinda late and really didnt get to preview properly. That sign came up early and it intrigued me enough to walk up to the runner and look at it to possibly bid. I immediately saw the stickers and did a 180. It went for (not positive) about 175.00. I cant believe the guy wouldnt mention that those are stickers added on there in his description. There was a lot of bogus stuff there as well as decent but mostly rough items. It was Sunday. Check out the Gulf "pump" it went for around1200.00+10%bp It is half an acetylene bottle welded to a iron channel with a visaguage and pricer box. http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/photop...=44147&kwd=

That so called gas pump is the damnedest POS I've ever seen. So is this Texaco sign. A fool is born every minute.

Looking at the pictures of that Gulf pump, looks like it had a one piece original globe, couple porcelain signs, visi-gauge, brass nozzle and a Texaco visible pricer box. If all those items were in good condition...I can see why people were bidding on it.

Well that explains why, on e-Bay sales of aged reproduction signs about 2 fools get ripped off every minute.

The one piece sold separately for 850 + the bump.(i think) Not too bad but- The paint (on the globe) was original but not very good. The signs (on the pump) were stickers. I looked @ the pricer box and I do not think it was a Texaco box. The pump did have a 13.5 inch glass globe on it but I didnt notice if it was was original or not as I didnt want to haul that chunk of iron. It was not worth over 1350.00.(1200.00 10%bp&tax. Unless a dealer bought it.(no sales tax)lol

Well at least the seller seems to be honest and added a statement in the ask seller a question.
