Hi All- I am new to the forum, this is my first post. I am also a young, novice collector just starting out and have recently purchased an Indian Gasoline Sign. Obviously at this point I don't have a trained eye, however I have been looking at other signs from auctions (ie Barrett Jackson) etc. that claim to be authentic and one thing I have noticed that is different about most of those signs compared to the one I purchased is the typeface of the word "Gasoline". I have attached photos of the sign I bought where you can see there are more "rounded" letters than the other signs. The most noticeable differences being with the G and N. Were there different typefaces used by Indian on these signs? Unfortunately, the date on the sign is obscured by the bent and chipped corner at the bottom right. The only number visible for the date is 9. Also, for me it is difficult to tell if the damage to the sign is real. In some spots where the paint has chipped it is powdery below. Were these particular Indian signs heavy? If you think it is a fake what are the giveaways. I did purchase the sign on ebay so I am skeptical. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Old Gas, Moniker. I'm sure the sign experts here on the forum will weigh in with their thoughts about your sign. One quick suggestion: you might want to post the exact dimensions of the sign. Best of luck in your future gas and oil collecting! John

Like John stated, the size would be helpful, but my initial word of caution is to be leery of ANY sign with obvious chipping or damage where a date code or important markings should be. I'm not a Texaco collector so I cannot offer an answer on authenticity, but wanted to offer some advice.
Good luck,
Darin

Thanks for the feedback so far. The sign is 12"x18". I was also suspicious that the date was obscured by a dent. My intuition tells me it is not authentic so I will be returning. It is definitely a good lesson to learn, and I am going to be more cautious and thorough going forward. I would still appreciate any input from those versed on Texaco/Indian signs for my own edification. -Sam

I wouldn't return it, looks right to me and you probably got it at a good price ? There are definitely signs in better shape available but again will probably be paying a lot more. I was hoping Doug (Blacktee) would chime in for you for positive answer on real or not....I'll email him and ask him to input.

I'm fairly certain that's a reproduction. That sign was produced right a long with the BlackT Fire Chief & Sky Chiefs dated 9-90

I know you're new to collecting. But you'd need to ask questions before you bid, not after.

Thanks Blacktee. I will be asking questions beforehand in the future. The seller agreed to the return so it's obvious he is aware it's a repop.

How about a pic of the back. I think the back will be gray if it is a older repop. The problem with these Indian signs is that the originals have gray, black, and white backs. Thus, using the back for a reference to authenticity is almost impossible.
