I purchased a 6' Mobil sign it has the Pegasus, and in the middle of the bottom of the sign it has 37 the guy I bought it from said he believed it meant the year 1937 is that true? When did Mobil go from the gargoyle to the pegasus?

WELCOME TO OLDGAS! YOUR SIGN MAYBE SAYS 1.R.37. THAT'S THE MAFGRS INITIALS (INGRAM-RICHARDSON...BEAVER FALLS, PA) AND YES 37 IS THE YEAR. I BELIEVE THAT THE GARGOYLE USE WAS UP UNTIL THE EARLY 30'S BUT IN SOME CASES THE PEGASUS AND THE GARGOYLE USE OVERLAPPED EACH OTHER DEPENDING ON THE AREA AND APPLICATION FOR MORE THAN 5 YEARS. SAME WITH THE NAMES MOBILGAS AND SOCONY WERE USED THROUGHOUT THE 30'S UNTIL MOBILGAS TO 1956 THEN JUST MOBIL TO THE PRESENT.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

Click here for the company's official Pegasus history . We need an expert Mobil guy to answer this, but there had to be some overlap of the Gargoyle and Pegasus logos considering the many regions and uses of the logos. There are even signs that have the text word Gargoyle as a brand with the Pegasus graphic. ------------------ Jim "Oldgas" PottsYour host and moderator

The gargoyle logo was used by Vacuum Oil Co. and the Pegasus by Socony. The two companies merged in 1931 and the Pegasus was adopted as the Socony-Vacuum logo by 1933. As the gargoyle (Mobiloil) had a strong customer following, it was used until the early 1940's. So yes, these logos did have an overlapping transition period.

IMHO, Mobilgas (and Mobilgas special) was used until 1962 when the use of Mobil regular and premium started. Thats when they changed from shields to the more flat logo on pumps. rgds Claes
