I am restoring a 1939 Signal Gas Station. Does anyone have a good example or source for the color green that would have been used on the exterior doors? I have not been able to find a sample under the layers of paint on the building. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rob renovprop@msn.com

Can't say I've ever seen an original Signal pump in green. The highboys or bulk oil contaniers were a pea green. I think most of there pumps were an orange color. I did mine in yellow fronts and black sides cause I say another one done like it. Just looked good to me. Sometimes you just paint them in whatever you like. Ted

I have a Signal Oil Company Painting Diagram dated 1954 that indicates the exterior doors were green. That is the color I am trying to locate. Thanks, -Rob

I just stripped a Bennett 640 tall that was in Signal most of its life. As far as I can tell, it was a dark fire engine red all over, then later repainted more of an orange in the 60s. (it finished life as a white exxon, yuck).
Here's the question: I've seen Signal restorations in the dark red with black doors that look pretty cool (check out gaspumpheaven.com), but my doors were definitely never black.
Can anybody document the red pump / black door combination?

The book, PCMs Guide to Gas Pump Restoration , shows all Signal gas pumps were solid red from the 1930s through the 60s except for super premium grade pumps in the 60s (yellow). I have seen Signal pumps restored using yellow with black and they looked pretty sharp. We usually say, "It's your pump, you do it the way you want." ------------------ Jim "Oldgas" PottsYour host and moderator

From collector Jim Sharp in Oxnard, CA. Signal in black and yellow. Don't know about the green door, but it seems like a nice contrast.
