I've always wondered how this sign was used. Becuase of the strange offset hole pattern, I was hoping for something a little more high tech. But it was simply mounted on a pole I guess. Or at least in this case.
Just something for those who, like me, didn't know.

If I had that photo, I could scan it with my extremely high resolution scanner to get a real good photo. I would be able to blow it up and it would be crystal clear.

I just did it to a 1909 photograph to see a small section of the photo. It worked like a champ!

Kinda funny-I didnt know this thread was going on and I just posted an explanation in the Online auction thread about one some one has on ebay. I'll copy and paste this and when I dig one out Ill snap a picture of it and post it. Its just a simple stake -like setup.
"Jut a FYI. These weren't on air towers. Although I suppose they could be put on one. They were just mounted on a piece of (About1 1/2") "T" stock About four foot high with a hook to roll up the hose welded to it. Thats why the holes are offset. One screw would go on each side of the stake. If that makes any sense. A picture is worth a thousand words and if I can dig one out of the squirrel hole I'll try to post a picture. I thought the first one I found at a station was home made, but then I found another, identical, at another station and they were like a hundred miles apart or so. "

Here's the older diamond version on the same basic rig.
The stations were so nice you think they would have done something a little more than just a stake in the ground.

Would this have been the decision of the station owner and then driven by his pocket book, or would/did the parent, in this case Sunoco, make such decisions?

BTW, those pumps are absolutely sick!!!

Steve's picture appears to be a company owned station and Mr. Seebacher leases it. Sunoco would be supplying all the equipment, he was just a dealer. This type of arrangement was still going on in the early 70s when I was a Shell dealer, a Phillips dealer and a Sunoco dealer.

No big deal, just a piece of signage supplied by an oil company to dealers who wanted to use them.
