The hose protectors on my pump is corroded and I want to know if there is a way to smooth and then re-chrome. Or do you just spray paint? How do the members do repairs to chrome parts? They are pitted so I know I must first do something to the fitting to make them smooth but what do you fill in the pits with?

Depending on the part, if you are having them re-chromed, the plating shop does all the filling with copper before the chrome is applied. If you are going to paint, fill with thinned body filler and sand, then paint. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

You may not want to do this, but I rebuild mine using aluminum solid bar stock for the long rollers and polishing them. I sandblast the chrome from the old mounts down to bare cast and sand the pits out of them, then polish those also. Most of the time the mounts are cast aluminum and will polish to chrome looking finish. If they are cast steel, I strip them the same way but replate them with common zinc in my home plating setup and then polish the plated piece. Here is a set of hose guards on an Erie that I did, before and after. The hose retract cable guide on this was steel that I plated zinc and polished. It's so close to chrome most can't tell.Takes some time, but my time ceased being worth much a long time ago...:)
